The Dispatch wrote Names surfacing to fill 2 vacant seats

Columbus now has another deficit: two City Council seats that must be filled before tough decisions are made about a budget shortfall that tops $90 million.
Councilman Kevin L. Boyce’s appointment as state treasurer means he’ll resign his council seat before taking on his new job Jan. 6. Councilwoman Maryellen O’Shaughnessy will leave before Jan. 3 to become Franklin County clerk of courts.
Gary L. Baker II, a Columbus school board member and former chairman of the Hilltop Area Commission, said yesterday that he will seek one of the council jobs.
Other potential applicants, whose names were floating around City Hall even before O’Shaughnessy won her new office, include Stonewall Columbus Executive Director Karla Rothan and University Area Commissioner Catherine Girves.
When does the draft Walker movement begin? Any thoughts about other candidates.

That makes two of us. ;) Ah, sink or swim is what I say.
A good thing to say, but keep in mind that one of those options is “sink.” :P
I know Catherine. She’s top notch.
She would get my vote.
Tyson was appointed 1/07 and faced voters in the next election 11/07 to complete the term of the member she replaced. Her ’09 run would be for a new four year term.
I know Catherine. She’s top notch.
She would get my vote.
+1 Yeah she is. She’s director of the Campus Area Enrichment Association. She’s also a VISTA supervisor and a cyclist.
I was really happy to see Catherine Girves name in consideration.
She has a great understanding of the grass roots side of neighborhood development and would definately get my vote.
I think we will all support Walker when the time is right – in the meantime let’s make sure some CU post or Facebook comment does not derail his future campaign.
Kim Gibson – good choice and a cutie – that makes watching the Council meetings on GTV easier.
Long term – let’s not forget the 2043 Candidate Desmond Evans!!!
Going big picture – my platform
Flat tax system and ditch what we have now.
Stop making pennies for 2 years.
National Healthcare for ages 0 to 18.
2 year service commitment for – Peace Corp, Vista, Armed Forces, etc., in exchange for educational assistance

I’d vote Walker too, but let’s not assume his popularity on CU will translate to the city-wide electorate.
I wish the Peace Corps and VISTA got as much funding attention as the Armed Forces.

So, if we tell Walker not to do it enough, will he go for it?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Maryellen O’Shaughnessy must be getting tired of people pointing out that she’s leaving the Columbus City Council for one of those political offices she’ll have to explain.
At City Hall for the past 11 years, she has pushed Columbus to improve its recycling rates and think of more than cars when it builds streets. She has championed Downtown housing and entertainment districts while criticizing sprawl. She has promoted the arts, backed the idea of streetcars and worked to protect rivers and streams.
At the Franklin County Courthouse, where she’ll become clerk of Common Pleas Court Jan. 3, she’ll issue auto titles and make sure court documents are filed properly.
“It’s not like I’m dying,” she said last week when asked for the umpteenth time whether she’ll miss her high-profile job and the issues that came with it.
Her passing from one job to the next is being mourned, however, by the city’s urban-hipster crowd, which found a kindred spirit in the Victorian Village resident who sponsored legislation last year to declare Columbus the Independent Art Capital of the World.
“Too bad,” wrote one contributor to the Columbus Underground blog. “I almost voted against her in the clerk of courts (race) because I wanted her to stay on City Council.”

Many of the people who’ve begged Columbus City Council members over the past month to spare recreation centers, health programs and other endangered services have remarked how tough their budget-cutting job must be.
But it’s a job that 65 people want, the biggest number in at least a decade to seek appointment to a vacant council seat.
“I’m encouraged that people would be willing to serve,” said Councilman Hearcel F. Craig, a 2007 appointee who won his own term that same year.
The list of applicants for two council openings includes 10 members of Columbus area commissions or civic associations, seven people who’ve already been appointed to city boards or commissions, five city workers and one elected official.

Out of those candidates I see Kimberly Gibson, Catherine Girves and Gary Baker that I would support. I worked a bit with Kimberly Gibson when she was at MORPC and she would be a great addition to council. The other two I don’t personally know but it seems others have had good interactions with them. I really hope Gibson gets one of the seats.
+1. I just know her casually, but I know that transit would be a top priotity for her. Also, I don’t think I’ve met a more positive, friendly, upbeat person in the workplace. That goes a long way toward getting things done.
Oh man, the majority of that list is laugh out loud worthy. There’s one on there in particular that would make my head explode. Now I know what I’ll be hoping for when I eat my black eyed peas!

+1 You cannot do better than this lady. Oh no you can’t. She is SMART and SAVVY re: all sorts of city functions AND social justice issues.
I am thrilled that Catherine Gervis is running. She has worked intimately in the University area community for years—where I live. She is committed to community work and has a deep understanding of how to make positive changes within the system to benefit everyone. She has been instrumental in mentoring young people, graffiti/litter clean up, free geek, The Weinland Park Civic Association, Pedal Instead, Community Gardening….I could go on and on. I don’t dish out compliments easily. She IS an integral part of Columbus and an important leader here in Columbus, Ohio. Oh and I forgot to mention, she created and currently runs the non-profit, University Area Enrichment Association. http://www.uaea.org Check it out!

I don’t see her running though. Her name just popped up on CU, but I have not seen any evidence of her actually applying for the position. Plus, I think she is more interested in grassroots activities and not legislating. ???
You must not have looked very hard. Here are two different links both posted in this very thread.

coffee just came out my nose! I’m not saying she’s not a fine citizen, but “not interested in legislating” is 179 degrees from Ms. Girves.

My bad, I didn’t see those links. My dad always said I was terrible at finding things. I always have to find my glasses when I wake up.
Great. I hope she gets it.

I don’t know her well, I just have never gotten that sense from her. Maybe its because she’s a friendly, just, and genuine person.
