More Ohio Gambling? Slot Machines a Possibility

Penn National Gaming, the developers behind the Columbus Casino have gotten the approval for their purchases of the Beulah Park horse racing track in Grove City, according to reports by both The Dispatch (”With slots a possibility, horse tracks snapped up“) and Business First (”Regulators OK Beulah Park sale to Penn National“). Last year, Governor Strickland pushed for legislation to allow for the installation of slot machines at seven race tracks throughout Ohio including both Beulah Park and Scioto Downs.

The fate of the slot machine legislation may come down to a statewide vote this November. Do you support the addition of non-casino slot machine gaming in Ohio?

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After spending more than $1.5 million to give Ohioans the right to vote on electronic slot machines at racetracks, three conservative activists abandoned their campaign yesterday - which appears to give Gov. Ted Strickland the go-ahead to proceed with his plans for 17,500 slot machines.

Strickland, however, appears to be in no hurry to revive his year-old proposal to turn Ohio’s seven racetracks into mini-casinos.

I think the cat is already out of the bag on this one. Once voters approved the four casinos, it opened the door for more moves like this one. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with putting slot machines in at the race tracks, since, at least here in Columbus, it’s an existing site on the outer fringes of town. Keep it out there.

Outer fringes comparative to Columbus, maybe… but Beulah Park is actually located adjacent to Downtown Grove City, which they’ve been working on redevelopment plans for over the past few years. I’m wondering how this will impact those efforts.
