Mizzen+Main Opens Short North Retail Store
Mizzen+Main was founded six years ago based upon a pretty simple concept: no one wants to look sweaty and disheveled in a dress shirt. Kevin Lavelle decided to take the moisture-wicking technology found in many types of athletic wear and put it to use in a more formal line of shirts for men. Thus, the company was born.
The business has maintained offices in Dallas and Columbus, and tonight the founders are launching a new flagship retail “guide shop” at 772 North High Street in the Short North.
We spoke recently with Mizzen+Main Co-Founder & CMO Web Smith to find out more about the new store.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background as it relates to the retail business?
A: Kevin spent his career in logistics, engineering, and finance, while I cultivated my expertise in all elements of branding, design, and consumer psychology. These two disparate backgrounds have enabled us to work together to incorporate innovation and strategic execution with top tier branding and world class design in everything we do. We’re not just building out a product lineup, we are creating a new industry and way of doing business with our supply chain, lean back office, innovative guide shop model. Core to every aspect of what we do and what our customers see on a daily basis is a brand they can relate to and want to be a part of – we are accessible and also aspirational. Our backgrounds – both in business and life – are central to our early success.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about the evolution of the business in Dallas and the decision to launch a brick and mortar store here in Columbus?
A: Mizzen+Main has sold to nearly every state in the United States and a dozen countries abroad. Our business is thankfully not location based, which enables us to have a broad reach and have our customers – Main Men – around the world be a part of what we are building. We chose Columbus as our flagship guide shop because it is the perfect blend of arts, tech, retail and fashion.
Q: What else drew you to the Short North for the store’s Columbus location?
A: When it comes to what’s next with a classic feel, there’s no better place than the Short North. From incredible food and art galleries to a host of incredible boutiques like Kingsrowe, Milk Bar, Tiger Tree, Repertoire, Brigade, Ladybird, Rowe, and Sole Classics, Mizzen+Main is honored to call the Short North our flagship guide shop’s home.
Q: Who is your target customer for you products in Columbus?
A: Mizzen+Main appeals to both current and former athletes, whether at the pro or recreational level, who care about their appearance while not being distracted by the things that don’t really matter in life. Columbus’ own Malcolm Jenkins has chosen our shop as the home for his signature line of bow ties, Rock Avenue Bow Ties. We anticipate a great mix of people from the sports legends of OSU to the arts and fashion communities and entrepreneurs trying to make their own mark on the world.
Q: What sort of things do you have planned for the launch event tonight?
A: We’ll have a great mix of people, food, and of course incredible drinks! We’ll also be debuting some great new products from American craftsmen alongside our classic lineup.
Mizzen+Main is hosting their grand opening tonight, December 6th, starting at 7pm. For more information, visit www.mizzenandmain.com.
