The downsizing trend has been on the rise all across the US in recent years, with both Millennials and Baby Boomers preferring to live in smaller apartments than ever before. And while tighter quarters have been around in cities like New York and San Francisco for some time, Columbus will be upping its game next year when the city’s first Millennial Self-Storage building is constructed Downtown.
New York-based company Uncle Bob’s Self Storage announced today that it will construct a windowless eight-story building in the Discovery District in close proximity to Columbus State and CCAD, offering both student and non-student Millennials a small-yet-affordable option for urban living in the heart of the city. Each floor of the building contains 48 secure ten-foot-by-ten-foot “pods” perfect for the self-storage of Millennials and all of their accessories.
“Thanks in part to the power of the ‘sharing economy’, Millennials have fewer material possessions than any other generation before them,” said ‘Uncle’ Bob Johnson, CEO of Uncle Bob’s Self Storage. “This makes them perfectly sized candidates for our experimental new housing product that we feel will be well received in a market where housing costs have only continued to climb in recent years.”
While the Millennial Self-Storage Building is being marketed as an affordable option, the amenities packages are quite robust. Each individual unit comes with a single energy efficient overhead LED bulb, and three of the storage units on the second floor are designated as a fitness center, an indoor dog park, and a media room available for private reservation.
The top floor of the building will feature “penthouse” suites that measure out to an expanded 12 feet by 12 feet and will be available for purchase as condos, rather than rentals. Prices for condos start at a reasonable $49,999, are tax abated for 15 years, and include a choice of luxury unit finishes — either a stainless steel or a brushed nickel drain cover in the center of the unit’s floor.
