The historical King-Lincoln district, known for its roots in the Columbus jazz scene, will soon be welcoming a new bakery. Mika’s Cupcakes and Creams will be opening in the Spring of 2016 at 821 East Long Street.
Owner Tamika Woods began baking at a young age. Seven years back, she took a few baking classes for fun, making cupcakes for friends and family, and her hobby slowly snowballed into a career. Last year, she quit her job as a registered nurse to throw her energy into baking, and readying a storefront.
“This has been a dream of mine to do, so being able to make it a reality is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Woods.
Woods acquired the 800 square foot space in winter 2014. The sit-down bakery will seat around 20, with a walk-up counter and surrounding small tables.
Cupcakes are Woods’ primary focus, frosted with her signature buttercream icing. Currently, ten flavors are available, including cookie dough, triple chocolate, carrot cake, strawberry, cheesecake, lemon, red velvet, cookies and cream, peanut butter chocolate, and peanut butter crunch. Cakes, cheesecakes, pies, and cake pops will additionally be available, along with coffee, tea, and lemonade to wash it down. When business starts rolling, Woods plans to add a gluten-free product line. She also plans to can and sell her buttercream icing.
If you’re looking to get a taste of Mika’s before spring hits, Woods is currently baking from her home kitchen.
Mika’s Cupcakes and Creams will be open 9 a.m. – 5 pm. Tuesday through Saturday.
