McCain makes decision on running mate

The Associated Press wrote McCain makes decision on running mate

John McCain is keeping the name of his running mate a closely held secret just hours before the Republican presidential candidate is set to introduce his No. 2 at an Ohio rally.

“I’m not going to be there. I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that,” one top prospect, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, said early Friday on his weekly call-in radio show on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis.

There also was no indication that another man considered among the leading contenders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, was heading to Ohio. He spent Thursday courting donors in California.

My main concern with the Palin option has always been more on image than substance: together, they look like a father-daughter team running for the office. Her youth will only emphasize McCain’s age. Obama’s youth might sort of emphasize Biden’s age, but honestly, no one will care.

    A May-December candicacy. Lovely.

Palin could be a formidable opponent for those who vote on the family values issues.

True. VP nominations rarely affect outcomes.

Since I enjoy following politics a bit, I’ll definitely tune into some of those VP debates. Should make for some interesting politcal theater if nothing else. Biden is known for his skill in debating (especially around foreign policy) and I don’t know a whole lot about Palin. I just can’t imagine that a young Idaho/Alaska native would have a world view that could go toe to toe with Biden. Maybe I’ll be pleasently surprised.

  • Well, I will say, just from my reading this morning, she’s a fascinating lady. Hunts, was an actual Alaskan commercial fisherman (fisherwoman?!?), seems very strong on ethics, and certainly camera friendly.

I don’t know man, while a case can be made for Biden remaining somewhat of an outsider…I don’t know how you can possibly make a case against Obama on the experience issue and then select someone who has a whole year as governor for your running mate.

Biden the outsider is a story that will elicit as much laughter as credence. You have to be a devoted partisan to actually accept that. He was there for as many years of Democratic majority (before 1994 and after 2006) as minority.

You can still make a case against Obama on the experience issue very simply: the top spot counts for a lot more than the second slot. It’s the simple and obvious argument, but that hardly means it’s wrong. Obama is running against McCain, not against Palin, and it will be very hard for Obama to stand across from McCain in debates, with McCain standing right there, and somehow reference his VP pick’s inexperience on the national stage as balancing out Obama’s own.

Given Obama’s VP pick, actually, Palin does have one new situational strength: Biden will not be able to savage her quite as freely as he would be able to do to someone like Cheney, e.g., Romney, Crist, or Pawlenty.

I think the debate schedule is set, and unfortunately, your plural was unnecessary. There’s only going to be one VP debate.

    Certainly.

I’m thinking more on the ad front, “John McCain says that Obama doesn’t have the experience to lead, then why did John McCain select someone with only a single year as governor to be a breath away from the presidency”.

  • Call me really cynical, but I see a great sotto voce campaign opportunity :

Make history and get the first female prez. Vote McCain, you know he’s gonna die soon.

You seriously think that ad would stick? If I were McCain, I’d shrug that off. Anything that sticks the word “inexperience” more saliently into voters’ minds right now is likely to accrue to McCain’s advantage, no matter how adroitly Obama’s counterpunchers frame the issue.

Most people in their 40s looked better in the ’80s, you know. :P

I don’t know, I think he handled the word “celebrity” pretty strongly last night…

Do you think that’s what’s going through the back of the minds of some of those Hillary fans?

I didn’t see it, but UK friends of mine were talking about women they saw on the Beeb for whom it was ‘Woman or Nothing’ in their support of Hilary.

While I don’t know about that, I do think there’s a fraction of really bitter Hillary supporters who may say “Obama wouldn’t select a woman as his running mate but McCain did!”

I haven’t seen the speech yet. Maybe he did.

Maybe you were always just going to say he did because you never considered it that strong of an attack, though.

I’ve skimmed the text of the speech a little, and I’ll admit that he’s making concessions to pragmatism that are inconsistent with the GOP caricature of him as an ideological, dogmatic liberal who basically votes a straight-line Democratic ticket with better rhetoric behind it. I have yet to see what in fact he means by harnessing nuclear power to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but the fact that he was willing to put that in the speech means he’s both started to talk about substance and started to carve out issues on which he might actually be willing to reach across the aisle. (That was, literally, the first such issue I’d even heard a hint of, which is why I’ve always contemptuously dismissed all of his “bipartisan” or “post-partisan” claptrap–his idea of everyone coming together is everyone becoming a Democrat.) That, over time, may well counteract the “celebrity” meme. Maybe.

  • yeah, watch the Buchanan clip I posted earlier if you get a chance Gram, one of the things he so applauded about this speech was how centrist it was.

p.s. The celebrity section was basically him outlining his life story, and stating it’s hardly the story of a celebrity (more or less).

Probably. I question the sanity of the Hillary supporters who say they will either stay home or vote for McCain. I’m really beginning to believe their votes are boiling down to gender alone.
