McCain makes decision on running mate
By LIZ SIDOTI
John McCain is keeping the name of his running mate a closely held secret just hours before the Republican presidential candidate is set to introduce his No. 2 at an Ohio rally.
“I’m not going to be there. I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that,” one top prospect, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, said early Friday on his weekly call-in radio show on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis.
There also was no indication that another man considered among the leading contenders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, was heading to Ohio. He spent Thursday courting donors in California.
Apparently it’s not Pawlenty…

That surprises me.
My guess: Kay Bailey Hutchinson. There’s a 99.2% chance that I’ll be wrong.
They mentioned Meg Whitman (former CEO of Ebay) as a possibility on the Today Show. I thought that sounded rediculous.
Dayton for the announcement = Rob Portman, that’s my guess

Yeah, I heard that too and thought…HUH!?!?
I mean, I see the logic of picking a woman to try and scrape up the disgruntled Hillary supporters…but really???
Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska, is being mentioned.
Pawlenty doesn’t even look good on a sign.
And personally… I think that Obama and Biden should embrace the the “Joebama” nickname and make some fun signs.
Who says politics is boring right?
:D
(this is s joke. no need to turn into wolves everyone)
It’s Alaska! This is gonna be fun.
Watching a 2nd year governor from Alaska debate Biden on foreign policy should be interesting to watch.
She’s a mother of five. Oldest son is being deployed to Iraq next month. Has a five month old son with Down’s Syndrome. Gave birth in April, was back on the job three days later.
She’s also quite photogenic.
This could get interesting.
CNN rumor is that a private plane from Anchorage flew into an airport just outside Dayton.
Is this official? I can’t find anything about it but here.
Just speculation.
If he picks Palin, is it based on issues or pandering?
Frankly, I would rather see him take Liberman. Nothing sells Maverick like a VP choice outside the party.
I don’t think McCain personally likes the history of presidents who picked VP’s outside their party.
Both died in office.

If he picks Palin, I’m actually willing to say it’s on the issues. First and foremost, she is known for being one of the more staunchly pro-life Republican leaders out there, and the social conservative base has been McCain’s weakness within the party. Also, I’m fairly certain that she’s a drilling advocate–moreso even than McCain, since it’s a rare Alaska Republican that’s against drilling in ANWR (as McCain himself is).
abc is quoting her spokesperson as saying she was in AK last night for fireworks and will be at the AK state fair today. political spokespeople never lie do they?
CNBC is running with it… http://www.cnbc.com/id/26454655
CNN is confirming Palin as the VP nominee.
and about an hour after CU, CNN just confirmed it on their website:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/29/mccain.vp/index.html the media has never jumped the gun on political announcements have they?
You know, this could be extremely damaging to McCain’s main line of attack. Since the single greatest criteria for a vice president is they’re “ready on day one”…picking someone younger, with even less experience, than Obama?!?
No worse than Obama bringing a message of change and uplift from a political outsider and picking a 35-year Senate veteran pitfighter.
My main concern with the Palin option has always been more on image than substance: together, they look like a father-daughter team running for the office. Her youth will only emphasize McCain’s age. Obama’s youth might sort of emphasize Biden’s age, but honestly, no one will care.

I don’t know man, while a case can be made for Biden remaining somewhat of an outsider…I don’t know how you can possibly make a case against Obama on the experience issue and then select someone who has a whole year as governor for your running mate.
