Max & Erma’s Owner Files for Bankruptcy

By: Walker

A little over a year and a half ago, the Columbus-founded Max & Erma’s was purchased by an investment company based in Pittsburgh. Today, that company has filed for bankruptcy. It sounds as if there are no immediate plans for restaurant closures, so fans of the original location in German Village can breathe a sigh of relief. Business First has more information on the story here.

  • I think the last time I dined at a Columbus M&E was at the Ohio Center.  But I did go to one in Pittsburgh (Cranberry Twp.) last year and while nothing was bad, nothing was special about it either. Pretty bland and I could have been sitting in any Ruby Tuesday/Fridays/Chilis/Applebees and never known the difference.  I do remember going to the one on Livingston as a kid and loved the phones and the table and the crazy interior.  That went away as the years passed.

The whole casual dining segment is being hit hard by the “fast casual” guys like Chipotle, Five Guys, Panera and the like. Every single one of those casual chains is going to have to do something to stand out from all the rest.

  • The Buffalo Chicken is good, they also have a really good turkey rueben that’s not on the menu, but they’ll still make it for you. Oh and don’t let me forget the chicken salad croissant.

Maybe I’m aging myself here, but does anyone remember when they had phones at each table to call other tables?

  • The phones at each table were great – the food was soooo much better I guess because of Barry Zack’s passion – it was always better than any chain..Sesame Chicken wings, freshly breaded Chicken Fingers, the Cheese Sticks, the Nachos Appetizer, homemade slaad dressings, the apple pie from the Ohio State Fair Pie Baking Winner.  I would still go there before I’d step foot in an Applebee’s or a TGI Friday’s, but it really used to be a thousand times better.  I think it’s always struggled financially, even when it was just a local chain.

  • I thought I was the only one who remembered the pones so I didn’t even mention them! I loved those phones.

  • I remember the phones at Kenny road and I would visit and dine and call the kitchen to see where my food was, since a friend worked there and told me the extension number for the kitchen…”this is table 24, where are my peanut butter skins?”
