Marvel and DC Unveil New Trailers at Comic Con, Plus Much More

The huge annual Comic Con in San Diego is wrapping up today, which means that we’ve all been bombarded by new trailers, teasers and announcement in the world of comic-related media across both television and film, as well as a heaping of new video game trailers too. These are the weeks that our “Trailer Roundup” series lives for, as it gives us a lot to review and look forward to in the months (and in some cases years) to come:

    Wonder Woman

Although stumbling with Batman V Superman, the DC cinematic universe launch continues with another heavy hitter: Wonder Woman. The trailer showcases an origin story for WW, which shows the Amazonian warrior leave her home to battle her way through WWI with a sword and shield. Arrives in theaters on June 2, 2017.

    Justice League

Once Wonder Woman is established, the whole DC gang is getting together for their first big Avengers-style outing in Justice League. Batman recruits Flash, Cyborg and Khal Drogo… er… Aquaman to join in the fight against… an unseen threat that we can only imagine will be revealed in a future trailer. Lands in theaters in sixteen months on November 17, 2017.

    Suicide Squad

Don’t want to wait for 2017 to get your dose of DC? Fear not. The Suicide Squad has nearly arrived, and they get one more trailer treatment from Comic Con. Be warned, though. This three-plus-minute preview seems to give a whole lot away in the action and one-liner department. In theaters on August 5th.

    The LEGO Batman Movie

Rounding out the DC film lineup is the LEGO Batman Movie, which gets a big new trailer from Comic Con, revealing (literally) Michael Cera’s Robin to accompany Will Arnett’s Batman. It’s like one big happy Arrested Development family reunion. Soars into theaters on February 10th.

    Luke Cage

Marvel’s Netflix series continues with the highly anticipated Luke Cage — the modern day tale of a hero with unbreakable skin who fights for justice in Harlem. The trailer gives a first look at an awesome action sequence set to Shimmy Shimmy Ya by Wu Tang’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP). Get ready to binge on September 30, 2016.

    Iron Fist

Luke Cage has been teaming up with Iron Fist since the 1970s, and while they never trumped the like of Spider Man or the X-Men in terms of popularity, they did carve out a niche following that was long lasting and interesting. Marvel hopes to do the same on Netflix by giving each of them their own series. This one won’t be ready until sometime in 2017.

    Doctor Strange

A second trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange give us an advance look a the mind-bending magic that the newest set of cinematic heroes and villains will fight their way through. Think of a cross between Harry Potter and Inception. And get ready to watch on November 4th.

    The Defenders

When Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and Captain America team up, it’s called The Avengers. When Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage team up, it’s called The Defenders. The B-Team of Marvel superheros will unite on Netflix in 2017 to face down a huge threat and save New York City once again.

    Walking Dead: Season 7

Everyone’s favorite post-apocalyptic zombie show returns on Sunday, October 23rd, and Comic-Con goers got their first look at the season with an exclusive new trailer release. Thanks to the internet though, the exclusivity didn’t last long and now you get to review what Negan has been up to as well.

Fear The Walking Dead: Season 2

TWD spin-off series returns on August 21 for the second half of its second season. The new trailer sets up a conflict with a number of Mexican gangs who appear to violently fight their turf wars against both the undead and the living that cross their paths.

    The Exorcist

FOX is also banking on the popularity of horror these days, and are converting the iconic 1973 film into a new television series. The exorcisms begin on September 23.

    xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Vin Diesel will be reprising his role as Xander Cage in the third installment of the xXx now-trilogy. Everyone thought the character was dead, but after a twelve year break, he’s back in theaters on January 20th to combine extreme sports with over-the-top action once again.

    Kong: Skull Island

King Kong is getting a reboot in 2017 because it’s been 12 years since Peter Jackson’s reboot in 2005. Time time around, the human fodder is replacing Adrian Brody, Naomi Watts and Jack Black with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel M.F. Jackson. Watch for it on March 10th.

    Blossom Tales

Do you love 1991’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the Super Nintendo? Then you’re going to love Blossom Tales, which looks like lovingly-made clone right down to the bombs, boomerangs and heart containers. Coming this fall to Steam on the PC.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Just like the millions of people playing Pokémon Go, Eddie Redmayne will soon be out on foot tracking down mythical creatures in the middle of a densely populated city. Of course, this story takes place in 1920s New York, so there’s no iPhone involved. Check out the new trailer and get excited for the movie’s arrival on November 18th.

    Sonic Mania

To celebrate 25 years of Sonic, SEGA is releasing a new retro game that remakes and reimagines the original 2D style of platform gaming. Sonic Mania will arrive sometime early next year across PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC platforms.

    Game of Thrones: Season 7

This isn’t much of a trailer… more of a teaser. But HBO decided that it’s time to remind fans that lots of people are hard at work on completing the next series of the show, unlike George R.R. Martin, who is still taking his sweet time with the next book. If anything, it’s a cool reminder as to what goes into making a huge show like GoT, but don’t expect a lot of meat about what comes next when the show returns in 2017.

    American Gods

The first look at this new series on Starz is an impressive and stylish take on adapting a Neil Gaiman where a storm is brewing between the old gods of lore and a new set of gods in America that have arisen in power thanks to the worship of modern life. The show has a star studded cast that includes Ian McShane, Crispin Glover, Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare, Gillian Anderson and more. The show arrives in 2017.

    Blair Witch

After 17 years, the founder of the found-footage genre of horror has returned for a surprise sequel that will land in theaters very soon on September 16th. The plot synopsis sounds like more of a retread than a sequel, so hopefully it can bring something new to the experience that the umpteen found-footage clones haven’t already accomplished in fits and starts.

    Skiptrace

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen much from Johnny Knoxville and even longer to see something from Jackie Chan, so the two decided to team up for Skiptrace. Continuing in the style of Shanghai Noon and Rush Hour, this latest installment in the Jackie Chan Plus American Sidekick series looks lighter on the martial arts sequences and heavier on the laughs. Arrives in theaters on September 2nd.

    The Magnificent Seven

Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington lead a team of misfits in this western reboot of the 1960 film of the same name. The fun arrives on September 23rd.

    NES Classic Edition

Nintendo loves to revisit their 8-bit classics, and this holiday season they’re doing so in a big way by releasing a pocket-sized version of their original Nintendo Entertainment System console with 30 games pre-loaded and a USB classic controller. The asking price is $60, which works out to two bucks per game… an easy pill to swallow if you want to rock out retro style.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead: Season 2

Last but certainly not least, we get a better (and Red Band) look at the second season of Bruce Campbell’s return as Ash. Get ready for another gorefest this October.
