WalletPop.com recently featured an article where the safest neighborhoods in America’s largest cities were profiled. The list was compiled using neighborhood crime data from the FBI and NeighborhoodScout.com.
According to their results, the safest neighborhood in Columbus is Marble Cliff, a small village of 650 people located west of Grandview and south of Upper Arlington.

They got their borders way off. Much of what they consider Marble Cliff includes Grandview Heights. Not surprised with the ranking, as it is a quiet little nook.
I hope the folks in South Arlington don’t get jealous and start a crime spree just south of 5th Ave so they can take the title!
Also found it interesting that the “safest” area of Detroit was kind of a relative term; you’re 10x more likely to be involved in a crime there than in Marble Cliff. Ironically, their area is the area around the casino!
Finally a crime ranking that doesn’t consider a 220 square mile area to be entirely homogeneous
does marble cliff have more than one cop car?i have only seen the one cop writing tickets on w 5th ave.
they don’t have cops, they contract pretty much all city services to Grandview (fire, police, schools, trash, pool/rec, library).
Only 650 residents……kind of unfair.
The 2000 census said the median income for a family in Marble Cliff was $90,000, I bet that went up. Estimated median house or condo value in 2008: $408,746.
The racial makeup of the village was 98.14% white. That makes it the whitest city in Franklin Co., possible the whole state. That number is what I find wierd about MC.

“This panoramic view of the commercial center of Marble Cliff is looking southeast from approximately the site of the former Highlights For Children building on RT #33. Seen to the right, along Fifth Avenue starting at the tracks, are the Marble Cliff Railroad Station and the Post Office/General Store. The Columbia Gas complex currently occupies this site. The three Price family homes are along the ridge to the right. The unidentified, distinguished young men are standing on the railroad turn-off leading to the quarry. Date unknown but after 1890. Development boomed after the extension of the street car line to the area in 1901.”
And from Touring Ohio: “Samuel Bush, the great grandfather of George H. Bush, 41st President of the United States, built his mansion in Marble Cliff. At the time, Samuel Bush was president of Buckeye Steel Casting, a large railroad parts manufacturing plant. His son, Prescott spent his early childhood in Marble Cliff and attended Douglas Elementary School, but later was sent to the all-boys preparatory school of St. George’s in Newport, Rhode Island. Prescott then attended Yale and remained on the east coast. He married Dorothy Walker in 1921 and their first son was George Herbert Walker Bush born in 1922.”

Last years safest city was Brick Township NJ which was 96% white.
While the most crime ridden city, Detroit, was 8% white
Are you insinuating a correlation between race and crime?
I’m not sure this is supposed to be a board for discussing racial tendancies as related to crime. We can probably all imagine a few all-white areas that have quite a bit of crime — for example, the economically depressed areas of appalachia. Further, many wealthy, law abiding minorities might not feal comfortable in old-money areas that are predominantly white, making these statistics look worse.
The biggest correlation between crime and demographics certainly is socioeconomic status. If you compared the % of people well above vs below the poverty line in Detroit vs Brick Township, I imagine the numbers would be even more staggering.
This reminds me of the documentary the New Metropolis where they mentioned once a suburb hits less than 60% white it starts to go into decline.
“Further, many wealthy, law abiding minorities might not feel comfortable in old-money areas that are predominantly white, making these statistics look worse.”
Who wants to have their kids grow up in an area where they will be the “different ones”, and have to be the representative for their race?
There are probably also long standing habits – real estate agents who steer minorities away from the area, social bans on selling to minorities. Sad, but this stuff still happens, and MC is the result.
And as far a crime – Bedford Park is 96.86% White, but is listed as a much lower crime rate than MC in the article. Statistically you get no support for racist conclusions (but economic factors are supported).
