Main St. Bridge Update
June 2, 2008 by Eric
With the recent delivery of a couple arch pieces and a second crane for the Main St. Bridge, it appears that things will start getting interesting in the next week or two.
I’m guessing that the cranes will work in concert, with one supporting the bolted on arch pieces, while the other grabs the next section. The first piece should bolt up with the concrete pedestal on the left half of the picture. Those two steel supports on the right half (one is obscured by the crane) will likely just support the arch until the tension is added.

Franklinton, maybe?
No, you’re right, not really.
I’m comparing the arches to the aesthetics of the bridge, not the bridge itself. There is extra money being spend on making it an aesthetically pleasing piece of infrastructure. We could have went cheaper and built something much more bland that still functioned just as well.
I’m saying that I approve of the extra money for good looking things that make our city look nice in photos. ;)
Agreed. Who else has prominent structures that serve no real function, but are important to a city’s culture? There’s probably lots, two immediately came to mind for me.
The Gateway Arch (St Louis)
The Eiffel Tower
We need something other than a big boat in the river.
The SN arches have been awesome lately. Rainbow during pride weekend. The other night was some crazy aqua to purple transition thing. It can be quite the show late at night. I always think someone is bored at work and having fun :)
ETA: Ooops, I got excited and forgot what this thread was about. The Main St. bridge will be awesome once it’s built. I get more, “Woah, this is neat” from people visiting me for OSU’s bridge on Lane Ave over the Olentangy than almost anywhere else in Columbus. Aesthetically pleasing bridges are cool and we have lots of bridges so there’s lots of room to play! Also, you have to spend money to make money, this applies in all aspects of life. If we want our city to be appreciated and valued as we all see it, we must make it look good to the people that have no vested interest in it. Attention to detail will get us there!
From what I’ve seen so far (the rendering that walker posted), this bridge looks like it will be a bit more elegant than the Lane Ave bridge. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I can’t stand the look of that thing.

The main street bridge design is an overhead arch supported bridge, the lane ave bridge is a suspension bridge that I do not think is actually being supported by the suspension. Frankly I think the overhead arch is a simpler and more elegant design. The lane bridge almost manages to appear ‘gothic’ and I don’t like it much.
it’s kinda TOO big. but it is interesting.

I’ve always thought that the suspension cables looked like overkill for that span but I’ve never gone far enough to the side to see whats going on underneath. I would think the bases of the towers would have been more than enough to support the bridge. I think what bothers me (this is only half thought through so bear with me) is that it really lacks restraint. Like a freshman year design studio project. “Lets do something big and cool that you can see from 315 and High Street! Make a gateway so that you know you’ve ARRIVED at OSU!” Clunky and unwieldy, not at all an expression of lightness that you should expect.
oh gee golly, i don’t know maybe bicentennial park, the cultural arts center, miranova and waterford condos, m restaurant, the miranova offices, cosi, genoa park, the entire riverfront in general, so you know, nothing really . in fact, why even bother to go downtown at all, right? i mean theres really nothing down there but homeless people and cota buses. what a waste of space!

I know what you mean, but it’s interesting none the less and it catches people’s attention. Honestly, I didn’t notice it for the first 4 or 5 months I lived here because I was always flying down Lane running late for class. Then my sister comes for the weekend and was like holy crap, what is that and I about wrecked the car trying to figure out what she was talking about. She says it looks like we’re entering Medieval Times
It was a huge difference from what was there before. Ugly little bridge that I think was only one lane in each direction and had very narrow little sidewalks. Lane Avenue was a much smaller road by OSU 10 years ago. It remains pretty narrow east of High. Anyway…

I think it looks like goalposts.
It does feel unnaturally wide for not being so long while you’re driving on it, but from a side view I think it looks pretty nice. Especially at night:

Ohmigawsh, thanks for posting that!! I’m amazed every time I see how something I assume has been there forever used to look. Would I have moved here by choice 10 years ago? No idea, but I’m grateful for the continued improvements!!

So that’s where you’re going to spend your Friday night? 8)

so theres no reason to build a bridge to a place jam packed with valuable attractions and amenities just because such things dont entertain you on friday nights?

Looking too gray for me, but I’m guessing they’ll take care of that later.
I just love seeing two different construction sites in the photo. It shows that the city is really getting going on improving itself. It is especially nice to see considering the economy right now.

The Main Street bridge is looking pretty complete (although the west bank of the river looks like a disaster area).
