Showdates: November 3 – 28, 2007
Opening Night Reception/Gallery Hop, Saturday, November 3, 2007
6:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Columbus, Ohio – On November 3, 2007, the Mahan Gallery re-opens its doors in its new, expanded location at 717 North High Street in the heart of the Short North. In keeping with its well-established reputation of showcasing leading contemporary art, the gallery will premiere the new space with an exhibit by Derek Hess entitled “Between Bad Relationships.”
Cleveland-based Hess is best known for his striking illustrations adorning underground concert posters. Inspired during his childhood by graphic novel Captain America and artist Gil Kane, Derek Hess has explored the rugged underbelly of society, capturing dark themes of depression, loss and death in his creations. Hess’ works have been exhibited worldwide and are included in permanent collections of the Louvre in France and the rock and roll hall of fame and museum in Cleveland. He has been featured in publications such as Spin Magazine, Newsweek, Juxtapoz, Alternative Press, and numerous other magazines around the world. His art has also been featured on MTV and VH1.
Owner Jacqueline Mahan said, “We are thrilled to have Derek Hess back with us for the re-opening of our new location. The new gallery is significantly larger than our previous setting, and we have many exciting, innovative plans for the additional space, as well as our website, that our guests will be able to see unfold over the next few months.”
Please join us for the opening reception, Saturday, November 3rd, 6:00 – 10:00 pm for a chance to meet and discuss the works with the Mr. Hess.

From Derek Hess’ bio:
“I’m lucky to have had the sense to take responsibility for the artistic ability I was given,†Hess says. “I’ve been able to develop it and grow.â€Â
Those are probably the wisest two sentences I have ever read. We all should be so smart. And I’m being serious, most of us shun our talents for “the right thing, the right lifestyle, car, etc.” Bravo!
I saw Jacquie at Northstar today… I’m convinced that she is the awesome.
I then went into the bathroom and accidentally pissed on myself and then felt too stupid about it to talk to her afterwards (piss stain and all). I forgot to lock the door and then in mid-piss decided I should.. and all hell broke loose on my pants.
Moral of the story… pick something and stick to it!
Anyway… that’s life, right? Sorry if I seemed rude, Jacquie… I was just covered in piss.
Fun Jacquie Fact: Her childhood dog committed suicide . . .
My childhood suicide committed dog… what a coincidence!

So classic MR and I’m glad that I’m not the only one. rofl
As for Jacquie I was ever so waiting for her to check out my studio at Agora and the second she stepped into my studio it was like she was standing on hot coals or something as fast as she turned around and left. I guess you win some and loose some. I am very excited to see how this space turns out and wish the gallery the best of luck. the new location is so prime it should be a major hit. Although it does leave a bigger gap between the north and south end of the hop.
North end of the hop? You mean Polaris mall, right? perhaps some light rail?

No I’m refering to the gap that happens just north of buttles. This is where most people that parked close to downtown tend to stop walking not and turn around. However there are several galleries, restaraunts, and destinations between Buttles and say Fifth Ave or about a block north of that where the northern most arch is located. Mahan used to help bring people north of buttles for some really great shows.

I have to disagree. There is clearly nothing of value between Buttles and I270′s north boundary. It’s all um….CRAP!
seroiusly Daniel all the fun in the Agora thred was kind of funny at the time, but can we leave that behind us and try to talk seriously. There are great places like Surly Girl, Roy G Biv, Rivet, Skully’s, Stained Skin, Gallery Upstairs, and a host of other locations that all have to deal with the Short North Business Association that quite frankly don’t get the same respect or the foot traffic that the Downtown side of the Short North gets.
back on track I think Derek Hess’ work is fantastic. I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table for the opening show.
ok, i acknowledge i have beaten a dead horse to death and then it died, but i’m not sure i’m ready to be serious yet. so i’ll bow out

Thank you for the words above, not just about Rivet but also about the SNBA or most recently named SNA.
I hope to make it to Mahan to see Derek’s work at some point during the month. I will be missing the opening though due to Gallery Hop.

since everyone tells me they can’t tell when i’m joking or not, sometimes i have to spell it out. I’m joking. awful deadpan sarcasm. I mean, my shop is between buttles and 270, so. . .
Sarcasm is great for personal conversations, but in your case it is keeping valid discussions from taking place at this point. We will make sure that next time skreened comes up we will throw all kinds of bogus talk to the wind just for you as retribution. Until then Mahan is the Topic.
Daniel, you are crap.
More of dereks work to keep the focus!!
ANd my favorite piece from this year was his submission to the Vader Project
http://www.derekhess.com/images/upload/8/image1/vadar.jpg
My favorite image of his is from an earlier poster… it shows a pregnant woman as a blimp throwing bombs down…. I can’t find it on the damn interwebs.
Just so everyone knows…. there is also a pre-hop opening.
November 2nd 6-8pm though it will probably go until 10 or so.
Just so everyone knows.
What’s up wit the haters here,
How about everyone do something to get more traffic in the north area of short north, instead of waiting for the SNA to do something….
Just my opinion that’s all, not stepping on toes here.
