Lux de Vie, a luxury personal care products store, is closing up their doors at 720 North High Street. According to an employee on the phone this evening, they will be closing sometime around the first or second week in January. The owners are planning on moving on to new endeavors. All in-store items are currently 10% off. More information can be found online at luxedevie.com.

BLAAH
I feel bad for these shops that are closing, for the people who went out on a limb to start them and for the resulting empty storefront. However, the description of the place says it all – “luxury personal care product store.” When is someone going to open something on High St. that is not a bar or restaurant that sells something that the average person would want to go get on a regular basis that wasn’t horrendously overpriced?
I’ve bought gifts in Lux de Vie. I don’t know if I’d consider it “horrendously overpriced”, unless you’re comparing it to the soap that the Family Dollar sells up the street.
Realistically, your “average person” is going to buy their personal care products at the grocery store or Target out of convenience, no matter what the price point is at a place like Lux de Vie. Specialty boutiques are a bit of a different market, and I really don’t see a huge problem with them setting up in a shopping district like the Short North, even if they command a slightly higher pricepoint than most people would consider to be an “everyday low price”.
They had some good products like Creed, but I never felt any passion for them when I went in there. Certainly not enough to warrant paying more than on-line or, in the case of Creed, going to Saks where the people there know the stuff. There is a subset of people willing to pay more than ‘everyday low price’ for specialty items, but you still have actively sell to them and not just take them for granted.
I don’t like seeing businesses close, but there are more than a few SN boutiques that are run in a very haphazard fashion and by people who don’t communicate any passion for their products.
A.
I’m sorry to see them close up shop. It’s a small storefront and was well suited for the block. I always liked their stuff, made for great gifts.
Dr. MoJoe jeans boutique and Starbucks have closed. Additionally, Take 2 Apparel and Luxe de Vie Parfumerie are going out of business. We will have lots of empty storefronts in this prominent strip of High Street soon….
I’m sorry that the economy is in the gutter, but does this mean that the Short North will return to its roots as an art gallery neighborhood?

Considering that at least one new business is opening for every one business that is closing, I’m doubtful that we’ll see a resurgence of art galleries opening. What we’re seeing right now in the Short North appears to be more of business turnover, rather than business decline. More on that HERE.
