Yesterday we wanted to try out something new in the Short North during the gallery hop. Having walked by this place numerous times and impressed with the interior style I thought it would be fun to check out Liu Pon Xi. The interior is decorated very cool. There are glass floors all over the place with live fish swimming. There are also multiple very large fish tanks scattered around. So, I was already impressed when I first walked in and to me environment is a big effect on first impressions of a restaurant.
The menu was very extensive which had various items on there that anyone would love to eat. Dishes ranging from sushi to chicken to grilled salmon. If you can’t find something you like here then you have problems. The sushi was very tasty. Sometimes you get stuck with a place that can’t make good sushi rice with zero flavor but they seemed to master it here and the prices were somewhat reasonable. The grilled tuna steak sandwich was relatively good but lacked sufficient flavor. It was somewhat dry so I had to steal a litttle wasabi from the sushi to kick it up a little bit. It needed to be marinded for a longer period of time. Another issue was the fact that the tuna steak was not exactly sushi grade here it was overcooked and broke up/flaked when I took my first bite. I am convinced still that the best place for a sushi grade tuna steak is still Fish Market.
The drink menu was also very extensive with wines and saki. The warm house saki was quite good and for $6 for a small crock it is well worth it. In the end, go for the sushi and the environment. The prices are very similar to that of Haiku and equally as good. The rice dishes looked very good and is something that I will have to try out some other time. If anyone gives this place a go I would like to hear what you think about it.

I’ve only eaten at LPX once and I wasn’t too impressed with what I had. I think it was the Shrimp Lo Mein (it was awhile ago, so my memory is fuzzy) but i thought it was mediocre and was a tad expensive. I would have paid $5 for it at any cheap stir-fry place, but I guess I expected more.
So yeah, perhaps it was just that one item though. I’ll probably go back to try other things.
I agree on the decor though. Very nice looking place. And the lounge-area up front is really cool just for grabbing a drink and hanging out.
this place was awesome…i will be back for more :!:
What did you get to eat? :D
i have eaten there a couple of times and haven really been impressed at all. Maybe i have just been to spoiled by tyfoon.
Yea, I’ve only eaten there once and thought it was ok. A bit expensive for what it was…..
