Lazarus Building Storefronts Ready by Spring 2009

progress-lazarus-retailWith the City Center pedestrian skywalk completely dismantled, many are itching for updates on what’s to be done with the near-empty downtown mall. While we wait for the Mayor’s office to throw us a bone, we shouldn’t be ignoring the renovations taking place just on the other side of High Street at the old Lazarus Building.

According to a recent update on the Downtown Columbus website, the development of retail storefronts in the old Lazarus building should be complete by Spring 2009. The website does not contain any details on any potential tenants for these spaces, but we’ll be sure to post up any announcements as soon as we hear them. Until then, does anyone want to speculate, or share their wishlist for the types of retail they’d like to see filling in these prime new locations in the heart of Downtown?

I think my Wishlist would include :

    - A Yaikitori Bar
    - A men’s shoe store
    - A toy store / gift shop
    - A electronics/gadgets store

    I’ll settle for 3 out of 4. ;)

Do you really think this would be a good spot for a bodega? The CVS is just a few doors down. Might be a tight competition for the “milk and eggs” crowd.

Hey, if they could keep late hours.

That’s the first thing that came to mind, but it’s hard to narrow down what would be best. I hope whatever goes in provides a healthy enough mix of practical for the residents and a bit of niche that can attract people downtown.

I thought he meant the bar because “bodega” was capitalized :)

Heh, that wouldn’t be a bad thing either. I wonder if Collin is looking to expand. ;)

i think a bodega or little grocery store/market would be nice..i think we need more of these all over columbus….personally i NEVER go to cvs for milk or eggs..maybe thats just me, i always thought those items were more expensive at a place like that….plus they never have soy milk. if it was an independent little market i would have less problem paying a little extra for milk knowing it was going to a mom and pop shop. some other stores i think might be good are:

    1. Some kind of flagship store a destination store like Puma or Nike (after saying I want independent stores..but this is for like tourists and attracting people down town) or maybe a Sony concept store or something.

    2. How about a Pattycake Vegan bakery? Something where locals that love downtown will go and support it. Maybe a Cup o Joe… I am not sure if these are zoned for retail or restaurants or both.

    3. Maybe a few nice boutiques all in a row, how about a Tigertree type store or Sole Classics, love those stores any other business owners in Columbus looking for good locations?

I noticed the other day that fencing was up around this area. Looks like construction has begun. :D

I run by this area about 2-3 times a week and cant wait for it to be done.  I wonder if they’re going to do anything to the upper part of the building … windows maybe?

They don’t quite look like the rendering up top yet, but progress is underway:

They’re moving pretty quickly on construction here, but I’m wondering if they’re still going to hit that “Spring 2009″ timeline. Only one more month and we’re into the summer. ;)
