Together, Larry James and Barbara Nicholson have built the King Arts Complex into an anchor of Near East Side development and a hub of community activity. For their efforts, the pair will receive the Arts Freedom Award from the South Side Settlement House on Oct. 24.

James has been president of the King Arts Complex board of directors since he was asked to serve in 1987 by then City Council President Jerry Hammond and Mayor Dana Rinehart.

In addition to serving on the King Arts Complex board, James is president of the King-Lincoln District Redevelopment Corp. and president of the Lincoln Theatre Association. The Lincoln Theatre on the Near East Side is undergoing a $10 million renovation.
