When it comes to sandwich shops, Columbus has some pretty good options, but if there’s one deli that stands out as a local institution, it’s Katzinger’s. The German Village eatery will officially turn 30 years old tomorrow, and will continue to celebrate the occasion for the entire month of October.
“In a business that has such a high rate of failure — and especially given the tough economic times we have all endured recently — we are grateful that we are thriving and continuing to expand,” said Diane Warren, owner of Katzinger’s. “I am as excited about the future as I am about our month-long look back at the past.”
Her mention of expansion refers to the new “Little Delicatessen” that opened inside The North Market in May, bringing a sandwich shop back to the building following the departure of Heil’s Family Deli. The new shop is a smaller version of the original, with a “greatest hits” version of the sandwich menu along with some grocery items, prepared foods, and of course — homemade pickles in a barrel.
To celebrate 30 years, Katzinger’s will be selling raffle tickets all month with winners drawn each week to win $100 gift cards. The proceeds of the raffle will be split between the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, House of Hope and Neighborhood Services. Additionally, Katzinger’s is soliciting stories from customers via email ([email protected]) and snail mail (475 S. Third St.), which will also enter storytellers to win $100 gift cards each week. The stories collected will be added to the collections on the walls of the store.
