John Kasich Announcing Presidential Candidacy Today

Ohio Governor John Kasich is scheduled to announce his entry into the race for President of the United States this morning at a special event being held at Ohio State’s Ohio Union. Kasich is the 16th GOP candidate for the race, following many others who have already thrown their hats in the ring, including Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal and others.

While Kasich has polled ahead of Hillary Clinton in the State of Ohio, national polls currently show his popularity as being much lower compared to GOP rivals.

The official announcement won’t be made until 11am, but the national response to his candidacy is already taking hold of the national media today. Below are a collection of articles that weigh in with more information and insight:

New York Times: “Known as a fiscal conservative during his nine terms in Congress, Mr. Kasich has recently taken more centrist positions, defending spending on social programs and noting his willingness to work with Democrats on immigration. Here are his positions on some important issues.”

Los Angeles Times: “His political unpredictability, late start and relatively meager fundraising make Kasich a distinct underdog in the GOP contest. He may not even qualify for the first presidential debate next month in Cleveland.”

The Guardian: “In his belated grab for staffers and donors, Kasich may suffer from not having previously locked in the support of major GOP rainmakers, including the Koch brothers, who stopped inviting him to their events after a 2013 episode in which he got into an argument with Randy Kendrick, the wife of the owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks.”

Mother Jones: “As a two-term governor of Ohio and a congressman for 18 years, Kasich has been in public life for over three decades; still, he is not nearly as well known as Bush, Trump, Christie or many of his other competitors.”

The Daily Beast: “The reason Kasich is to be taken seriously in his bid for the White House, in addition to his enormous success in the Buckeye State, is that he has always overcome obstacles when people told him what he couldn’t.”

Politico: “Kasich has a more immediate concern: qualifying for the first Republican primary debate, slated for Aug. 6 in Cleveland. With only the top 10 contenders in national polling making the cut, Kasich, as it currently stands, would be left out — a potentially embarrassing blow given that it will be held in his home state.”

Washington Post: “Kasich would begin the race far back in the pack, according to most polls. But as the governor of one of the nation’s most important general election states, and with a political style unlike that of others in the race, Kasich’s advisers say they believe he can become a credible threat to win the nomination. His detractors question whether he has the discipline required to win a long and grueling presidential race.”
