Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Launching New Cookbook this Spring
Few will argue that Jeni Britton Bauer is one of the great entrepreneurs of our city. She took what was essentially a dream – to make flavorful and artistic ice cream using the best ingredients and flawless technique – and turned it into a multi-million, multi-state business.
Along the way, Britton Bauer has won numerous accolades, including a James Beard Award for her first book, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream at Home, in the Best Baking and Dessert Book category in 2011. This spring, Britton Bauer will release her second book, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts, a hardcover, 220-page manual for those who want Jeni’s-quality confections at home.
For genuine Jeni’s groupies, this is the ultimate bible. Britton Bauer shares with readers new techniques she’s picked up for creating the tantalizing cold treat, including new instructions on how to produce luxurious custard and creamy non-dairy bases.
The book will feature recipes as well, and not just for Jeni’s famous and inspired ice cream flavors. Britton Bauer is also sharing her from-scratch takes on cakes, pies, and sauces, all the things that naturally pair with ice cream.
There will be a recipe for Vegan Butter Caramel Sauce, among ones for other decadent toppers, as well as directions for making diet-busting cakes and sumptuous scones. Britton Bauer’s guide to simple and delicious pies is easy to follow, and relies on ingredients readily available to the home cook.
And for those who remember the early days of Jeni’s, and the insanely delicious waffles she would make for use in the creation of the ultimate dessert, that recipe, along with the one for her flaky and buttery biscuits, is also included.
The recipes chosen reflect Midwestern taste from the late mid- twentieth century to the 1970s, and are laden with rustic appeal and homespun passion. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts is a way to get folks to think, and talk about, ice cream differently – as a part of a collective experience that joins us together, not just an indulgence.
“Little things can change the personality of a dessert, and that’s when the plate becomes a conversation starter,” says Britton Bauer about the impetus for the new book. “This idea that when it comes to dessert, you can make one or the other, I don’t accept. That’s why I’m always tackling new challenges, always in the kitchen creating.”
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts goes on sale in late May or early June. It will sell for $23.95. It’s a great gift for aspiring gourmets, local lovers, and everyone who’s ever wanted to know more about the wicked magic behind Jeni’s sinfully good treats.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts will be sold in stores, online at Amazon.com, and at www.jenis.com.
