Jeni’s to open in Old Dublin in Spring 2009

By: GreenTea

They are planning a store in Old Dublin on High/Bridge Street, to open Spring 2009. Jeni’s was a vendor at the Irish Festival this weekend and they had a big banner to advertise. I am one excited Dubliner!

  • Well I guess that answers Walker’s question.

We didn’t even have to wait that long to find out. Good luck to Jeni’s (not that they need it) at all of their locations.

  • Nice. Should be a good spot for them. I figured their next store would be location a bit further out, yet still in a spot with character. I was thinking Old Worthington or Westerville or Powell, but this spot sounds just as good.

    :D

  • So, there’s now a reason to go to Old Dublin. Except Downtown already has a Jeni’s. 8)

  • Judging by the undying line at every one of her locations, it only seems appropriate that she opens yet another store. I’d say, “I hope she’s not expanding too fast”, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. Every time I walk into any of her stores, there are at least 3-5 people in line. Good for her! :-)

  • Considering the demand, I doubt she’s actually expanding as fast as she could, though arguably no faster than she should. There are other Columbus neighborhoods that could and almost certainly would support one … let alone communities outside Franklin County.

  • That’s awesome for Jeni and Charlie and the gang. I got several pics on my flickr rss feed for some new delights they created/photo’d lately and I couldn’t get to the shop fast enough to sample some.

  • I thought about breaking the news here, but we decided to go with the banner at the Irish Festival.

We’ll be at the corner of 161 and High Street in Old Dublin. It’s down the street from LeChatelaine, Starbucks, Brazenhead, etc.

We have so many customers and friends who have been asking for a store in Dublin that it like a good fit. (I also used to work at OCLC and have many friends there as well).

The issue was finding a location that felt right in terms of character and neighborhood and we are very happy with this one.

    Thanks for the continued support!

  • I always have mixed feelings when a successful business that is unique to the city begins a push into the suburbs. I also have mixed feelings when a store that focused on a couple of locations begins to expand to many locations. I realize that good arguments can be made in favor of pursuing this type of expansion, but I still find myself feeling like something is lost in the process.

Kind of like Katzinger’s… If a Katzinger’s started popping up in every nook and cranny of the region, it would definitely water down the appeal for me.

  • If I recall reading an article correctly, after the Bexley store opened the owners said their kitchen was not capable of supplying more than four shops. Have the production facilities expanded, or was a way to increase production worked out?

I don’t think anything has to be lost in the process. There are many chain stores who are able to expand without letting their quality or consistency suffer. I think Jeni’s will continue to do fine as long as their goal is not to make as much money as possible, but to provide great ice cream to people.

That said, I do actually hope they pop up on every corner throughout the US. I want to see more small Columbus businesses become infinitely successful, and rewarded for that success.

  • i’ve still never been to jeni’s

It’s a concern of ours as well, and has been since we opened the second store in Grandview. At the time we asked ourselves how we could be possibly recreate the experience at the North Market when Jeni served every customer herself. Since then we’ve tried (successfully I think) to hire great people and give them training and support to create an amazing (and consistent) experience. We wouldn’t expand if we didn’t believe we could maintain our standards.

And if you do have a sub-excellent experience we always want to hear about it!

    Thanks-

Production capacity at the kitchen was expanded during the construction at the Bexley store, in part because we started to see a spike in internet sales at the same time. We may need to make slight additions to support the Dublin store.

You are welcome any time! I had never been to http://www.growndflore.com/ until 30 seconds ago. I like the British are coming t-shirts!

Sneak preview of October ice cream: Olive Oil w/ Seal Salt Pumpkin Seeds. Got to do some samples of that today – wow!

    thanks

Jeni was one of the first people I met when I worked at North Market (Charly, I think I sold you a few cases of wine for your Cocoa Zin when I worked at Grapes). I can seriously say that every person working at the Grandview shop has captured her sales magic. They love their product and seem to get a genuine thrill out of introducing us to new flavors.

Oh, and as a side note, my sister in law in NYC went wacko over the selections shipped for her birthday gift. Thanks!

I’m really hoping you meant Sea Salt. Seal is an acquired taste, unless you’re Inuit.

  • HA! I caught that too Joev and was thinking, hmm, how exactly do they extract that Seal Salt?

    Run- don’t walk!
