Best Ice Cream: Jeni’s Ice Creams

Runners-up: Graeter’s, Cold Stone Creamery

March 27, 2008

Are some of us starting to take Jeni’s ice cream for granted? Maybe we’ve had it so good for so long we’ve become spoiled with the best.

Well, if this is the case, as I suspect, then maybe we should stop and smell the Strawberry Rose Petal flavor all over again. Because Jeni’s ice creams are as good, or better, as anything in Columbus. Ever. With their intense flavors — Jeni always uses only the best and freshest ingredients available — and their remarkably smooth textures, they truly are world-class.

  • I love Hazy Stars.

  • The best ice cream, anywhere. She’s an artist and this city should be proud to have her around.

  • I want summer here now so I can justify mowing down some of the key lime and sumpthin-else-delicious (cardamom?) ice cream.

I blame my corpulence on the fact that Jeni’s is on my block.

    No doubt.

Jo and I eat there regularly. Way to pack on weight before the wedding.

  • Definitely one of the things I miss most when I’m in Canton, though of course, not so much in the winter because I don’t eat ice cream so much then.

Naturally, I still like me some “normal” store-bought ice cream (can’t go wrong with Breyer’s IMO), but it’s just not the same.

  • We moved here from Boston, where Toscanini’s and a few others are widely regarded as the last word in ice cream. It took me about three seconds to be won over by Jeni’s lineup once I started sampling it in North Market. I tend to gravitate toward the more savory flavors, myself — the ones with cayenne, for example, or the black coffee. Best ice cream I ever ate is a Jeni’s seasonal that just went out, the Lapsang Souchong with Armagnac Prunes. Smoky and unbelievably delicious. So all of the above accolades, and more, are well deserved.

  • roy wrote I don’t think Jeni needs me to defend her sublime ice cream when the NYT writes: “Jeni’s of Columbus, Ohio, has surpassed the creativity of all ice cream makers.”

But on this very board a poster recently chided Jeni’s, calling the ice cream ‘amateur.’ Hey, if you don’t want to pay the extra couple bucks for Jeni’s chocolate gelato, buy B&J’s at the corner BP. I’ve done it myself late-night.

    Jeni’s ‘amateur’? That was funny.

Oh will you get over that already? I was merely trying to make a point at the creativity behind a chocolate company by stating that it made Jenni’s LOOK amateur. I did not SAY that it WAS amateur. It was my way of making a statement that I thought the people of Columbus would understand.

I even retracted my statement on the previous thread. Let it go.

  • Jeni brings joy to my life.

  • How did cold stone make it? Denise’s is superior to Graeter’s and certainly Cold Stone.

  • no diss on Jeni’s but I like Denise’s better IMO

  • Jeni’s cream of violet is the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. Of course they deserve to be “best of 2008.”

Some of the other “best ofs” were a little dissapointing, however. I don’t like the fact that it is “best of Columbus” but then national chains like Chipotle are listed as the best in the city, when there are some really delicious Columbus-based restaurants that were overlooked.

  • Hmm. Flipping through the subsequent bests…. Best Dessert, Cap City, followed by Pistacia Vera? That’s remarkable. Not to take away from Cap City at all — I can’t really say anything one way or another, as I’ve honestly never had the dessert there — but Pistacia Vera’s offerings are pretty phenomenal. Not to digress.

Edit: The fact that it’s a reader poll (I missed that initially) changes the complexion of the results a bit. I was initially floored that places like Rosendale’s, the Refectory, L’Antibes, Alana’s, etc., etc., didn’t take top honors in multiple categories — in any, actually, come to think of it. But in retrospect the fact that some of them placed in the top three pretty consistently is, I guess, a good sign. OK, digression seriously over.

  • This is the only Alive #1 I agree with.

I want to drop out of school and eat Jeni’s ice cream all day.

  • never had it but judging from the flavors that ive heard of, they must be the best of 2008.

  • I’ve only been to Jeni’s a few times – it is indeed fantastic, but I’m still a Denise’s guy (Handel’s, too).

One unmentioned thing about Jeni’s, though, is that they also have Frostop Root beer (and even make a flavor from it!). It’s the best root beer ever – small batch, old-fashioned style REAL root beer. It’s not cheap there, but when is the best ever cheap? And even better – it’s a local product. Their contact page lists Harmon Ave, Cols, Oh as their address.

  • The Canton Repository also agrees Jeni’s is some of the best ice cream…

The Canton Repository wrote Best ice creams

No need to mince words. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are some of the best we’ve tasted: perfectly smooth and fluffy, not too sweet, and with flavor combinations that had us swooning over the cartons.

Based in Columbus, Jeni Britton-Bauer makes her products in small batches using in-season local ingredients and what she calls “responsibly raised exotics.” That means that Thai Chili combines peanut butter from the Columbus company Krema with coconut milk and toasted coconut, plus a hint of cayenne.

Our other favorites were Cherry Lambic Sorbet, Salty Caramel, Black Coffee and Ugandan Vanilla Bean; Madagascar Chocolate Freckles and Creme Fraiche with Amarena Cherries will be available soon.

Outside of a few stores in Columbus, the company sells only by mail order, but our shipment arrived with the ice creams deeply frozen thanks to dry ice. They are also not inexpensive. Jeni’s ships only in packs of six or more, and a six-pack starts at $70 (plus shipping). Available at http://www.jenisicecreams.com.
