The Jewish Community Center is celebrating their 100th year. They have filled 2013 with many events. To also commemorate the occasion, the center turned to artist Paul Palnik to design and illustrate a limited edition poster in his signature black and white cartoon style.
“The heartfelt, original artwork now on display in the JCC lobby features 100 memories of the JCC, humorously reflecting on everything from swim lessons to the old JCC bowling alley to the Camp Hoover ropes course,” says Felicity Nesham-West of the JCC.
Former JCC Associate Executive Director David Valinsky and Hani Hara had the idea to approach Palnik about creating a piece of art that would reflect on the memories of the JCC’s members, the history of the organization, and would become a collector’s item to be passed along through generations.
“But the idea evolved into much more,” says Hara. “Paul really brought the memories to life in this poster. I couldn’t name a favorite. They’re all so good.”
The poster, “I Love the JCC! 100 Years Young and Better than Ever”, showcases history and memories in black and white panels. Panel highlights include Bexley-born crooner Michael Feinstein seated behind his piano, a fondness for kosher hot dogs, various sports and clubs, and dropping kids off at pre-school.
Palnik came to Columbus as an undergrad at The Ohio State University in the 1960s and has remained connected to the JCC and to the Columbus Jewish community. This poster also illustrates many of the friendships and connections he has made throughout his life here.
“The people, certain personalities, are my favorite memory,” says Palnik. “Many of them have passed away. They’re part of [this poster]. …That’s why this is meaningful for me. There were so many wonderful, wonderful men…colorful, Yiddish kind of characters. …They taught me so much.”
The limited edition prints are now on sale. To own one, contact contact Melanie Butter by email or 614-559-6233. An extra set of posters with a blank space have been printed if you would like to have it personalized by the artist to include your own memory.
