When we last visited 520 South Front Street, it was on the eve of the closure of McCasky’s Grille, a short-lived three-month venture that failed to attract the same kind of following that renowned Chef Harmut Handke did there for the 18 years prior. Local restaurateurs Kevin and Lori Ames are ready to give the space a shot starting next month when they reopen the venue as Jack Whitney’s.
The new concept would be a two-parter with a bar and grill located in the upper portion of the space (which is technically still below street level), and a more formal banquet facility to host private events downstairs in what would be dubbed ‘The Cellar at Jack Whitney’s’. The Ames recently launched their latest venture Frezno Bar and Grille just a block away in May and have prior experience with close proximities.
“We opened the Press Grille across from the original Frezno in the Short North, so this is basically the same idea,” explained Kevin, who also opened and operated Cafe Lola, Burgers Dogs & Fries, and Cinco simultaneously at Broad and High. “There was lots of energy this summer at Frezno, and throughout the entire Brewery District area.”
The main bar and restaurant at Jack Whitney’s will include a menu and a concept not unlike the one at Frezno.
“The menu will feature good little burgers, nathan’s hot dogs, pecan praline and bacon popcorn, Dagwoodz mac n’ cheese, a house-made sausage platter and spicy cheese fondue,” said Kevin. “Oh, and of course it will have beers and cocktails galore.”
The Ames plan to have Jack Whitney’s open on November 18th, operating 11am to 1pm Monday through Thursday, 11am to 2:30am Fridays, and 4pm to 2:30am on Saturdays. They’re already taking reservations for holiday parties ranging in side from 25 to 250 guests. Party reservations can be made via [email protected].
