Friday, February 8, 2008Starbucks Corp. finally may have discovered a competitor able to throw a wrench into the ubiquitous company’s growth machine – itself.

“Talking with employees, we all thought Starbucks seemed to get away from what they do well,” said Colin Gawel, owner of Colin’s Coffee in Upper Arlington. “That makes it easy for us to keep our identity.”

What Starbucks used to do well, in the estimation of many, including CEO Howard Schultz, was offer a place to gather, relax and enjoy high-grade – if not pricey – coffee. Chris Lamb, roastmaster for Crimson Cup Inc. in Columbus, said that is the role independent coffee shops now strive to fill.

  • Colin’s a cool guy and was a huge member of the local music scene for years as lead singer of Watershed, which I don’t know if the article covers (since it’s subscribers only LOL).

    I first met Colin when he was a bartender at Black Forest Inn on campus in 86-87 and was actually shy to jump on stage and show his musical abilities with the live acts that played there and always liked him.

    He also has great coffee :lol:

  • Support the local guys! Also, I am a big fan of Dino’s Cappuccinos in Arlinton and Yellow Springs.

  • I rememebr a while ago, I read the open letter that Shulz wrote to those leading his comapny at teh time. He went on about the same stuff. Now that he’s back in charge, I wonder if there will be a drift back for Strabucks to the things they’ve lost.
