    In Limbo: Updates on 20 Urban Development Projects That Were Quiet in 2017

    Here’s a list of potentially big stories that we didn’t hear much about in 2017. They didn’t fit into any of the categories for our annual Year in Review — completed, under construction, or proposed — so we thought we’d compile another list, this one focused on projects that first came to our attention in 2016 or earlier but did not make big waves in the past year.

    Some updates were made to the Millennial Tower proposal, but the Downtown Commission still has some questions about the project.

    A new plan for the Grandview Mercantile site in the Short North was approved, but construction has not yet started on the project.

    Design changes for the proposed IBEW site development were brought to the Victorian Village Commission earlier this month.

    Some well-known bars closed in anticipation of a large hotel and office development on Park Street, although the final plans for the project have yet to be approved by the Downtown Commission or the Historic Resources Commission.

    A plan to convert Bollinger Tower in the Short North from affordable senior housing into a hotel is moving forward under new ownership, but work hasn’t started yet.

    12-story hotel proposed for the corner of West Eighth and High has not been brought back for a second design review.

    Still no movement on the new restaurant planned for some long-empty buildings on North Fourth Street.

    Work is scheduled to start in 2018 on a long and skinny building behind the Gateway.

    key piece of property that straddles the University District-Clintonville line continues to sit empty.

    In Clintonville, only one of the three large apartment developments proposed in 2016 has started construction.

    Some changes were made to the plan for Mount Carmel’s Franklinton campus.

    No further plans have been announced for two historic buildings on Taylor Avenue.

    Work has not yet started on a 78-unit apartment complex that was approved for Parsons Avenue.

    Same for an apartment building on a prominent corner in Bexley.

    Plans to build a five-story hotel and restaurant on Lane Avenue are on hold until a referendum on the proposal is held in November of 2018.

    Work hasn’t started yet on a former Franklinton fire station, but Heritage Ohio still plans to renovate the building for offices.

    There have been no signs of construction activity in the Brewery District, where a multi-story storage facility was planned.

    Nothing has come of a seven-story proposal for Town Street downtown, and plans to demolish and redevelop the Grant Oak apartments did not move forward in 2017.
