The Columbus Compact Corporation is seeking interested community members to help plan and execute the redevelopment of the Franklin Park Trolley Barn facility, located at the northeast corner of Oak Street and Kelton Avenue, just one block south of Franklin Park on the Near East Side.
As part of this effort, the Compact is organizing a group of interested and concerned stakeholders, called Friends of Franklin Park Trolley Barn, which has a page on Facebook. Anyone is encouraged to join this group and support this critical redevelopment effort.
Over the past two years, Columbus Compact Corporation has engaged in sampling opinions and ideas of area residents and stakeholders about how the site could be reused and/or redeveloped. In continuing this process, a community visioning session is being held this Saturday, September 4 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Central Community House, 1150 E. Main Street. Snacks will be served and there will be a short trip to Franklin Park Trolley Barn for walk-around on-site at 11:30AM. Please RSVP to CynthiaDavis@colscompact.com, or register Events section on the Facebook page.

Great timing. My girlfriend is looking towards an apartment, so I had swung down Town to show some of the buildings near the Topiary Park, then drove by the Trolley Barn and mentioned plans for reuse.
I would love to see another North Market type space. Especially in areas like this were business incubators can be a key to rehabbing the area and bringing new business in. One suggestion would be to include some space for food trucks. This type of project could very well seal the deal for me to move into the OTE area.
Yeah, my hope would be that “Community Market” and “Antique Market” would both be places that are divided buildings with smaller individual vender stalls similar to the North Market or the Pearl Market with a mix of food and non-food vendors.
This could be a real anchor for the neighborhood. Lots of potential.

How about using it for several things, would love to see a market, not so much a prepared food stand market but a farmers market and meats (like the West Side Market in Cleveland)
A skate park might be a nice addition here.
Look forward to see what happens, nice property to fix up.
I saw this example of a vacant commercial block in Dallas that the neighborhood temporarily took-over, installed some amenities, held an event to promote the new space, and let the excitement snowball into new tenants and a new neighborhood center: http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/kbenfield/building_a_better_block_demo_i.html
Thats a very cool concept they did in Dallas. That would be amazing if something like that happened in Columbus.
Wow, exciting possibilities in my own backyard! Just came back from a visit to Cleveland, and was overwhelmed by the scale differences between our North Market and the West Side Market. Would absolutely love to see another competing open stand produce market as well as a space for community idea sharing. Franklin Park has a great community garden that could funnel individual small scale produce into neighborhood hands and mouths. Yes to a skate park on the near east side too!
markets are great and everything but I’d love to see the biggest trolley building turned into a ballroom with a garden patio out back. :)

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A complex of buildings that once housed Columbus streetcars did not endure the winter well. Freezing and thawing and age have loosened bricks that then toppled from a wall. Rotting wood is weakening roof trusses.
