The Hyatt Place signage just went up on the front of the new Grandview Yard hotel building on Thursday afternoon. The six-story 126-room hotel is still under construction with an opening date scheduled for September 1st. Additionally, the hotel has started to accept online reservations that coincide with the first OSU home game in the fall, which takes place on September 2nd against Marshall.

I’m really confused with how the Grandview Yard is coming along. The buildings seem pretty stark and over-sized. Was sort of expecting a more Easton-ish feel. Hopefully, Phase 2 brings some of the smaller-scale shops, restaurants, and people friendly areas. I’m guessing the landscaping will help hide all that brick in Phase 1…

How is it over-sized?
3-6 stories is certainly not all that big… if anything a bit too small. I for one would upset if it was only 1 or 2 stories tall. It’s hard to judge the final project when it’s still under construction. Once the other phases are completed I’m sure it’ll look better.
I recall plans being scaled back considerably due to the recession (less focus on retail and residential). This phase is suppose to be a show of confidence that Nationwide will continue to develop the project.
I hope Phase II isn’t too far away, though the economy being would it is could be delayed (1+ year).
the size is def. not too big. its only a mile from the Arena District. Also, i looked at the pics of the rooms …… very nice!
one other point …. that’s the back of the building. If you look at the grandview yard website you can see finished pics of the front. much more interesting design.
I’ve been impressed with how fast this building and the building at Olentangy and 3rd have moved in the last few weeks. Now if they can just get moving on my new gym I’d be super pumped :)
Seems like there’s a lot of new hotels going up in/near downtown

Lots aligned along 315 too…

The Hyatt Place hotel is a pretty average size. It would have been nice to see a larger hotel. At 126 rooms it’s the smallest of the three new hotels planned in the dispatch article (along olentangy river rd).
It defiantly lacks the wow factor of the Hilton at Easton or Polaris.
Excited about the gym.
I’ve stayed in a couple of those concepts and they are awesome hotels which will be a great fit for the development. Bigger is not always better.
I am pretty sure there is a Massage Envy local franchise going in there somewhere….
They can tear down that ugly strip mall on 5th and Hess, move all those shops over to the yard.
Let’s not also forget they tore down the old nasty buck cafe and are building another hotel there on Olentangy rd. Which will make traffic so much better during phootball season.
“It defiantly lacks the wow factor of the Hilton at Easton or Polaris.”
I feel like if the Hilton at Easton “wows” you, that you haven’t gotten out and about much. I’ve been in the event and lobby spaces as well as the guestrooms, and there’s no wow factor there. It’s a “nicer” hotel, but that’s it.
And yes…please hurry with the new gym! :)
I just meant from the outside, I’ve never been inside of the Hilton at Easton or Polaris.
Thanks for the personal jab though :)
Don’t make me stop this car. I’ll pull over right now. :)

No, I’m not saying it’s too tall – I agree, it could be taller. I’m saying the scale seems off for the neighborhood — the walk between buildings is pretty drastic and there is no street level interaction (restuarants, cafes, plazas, etc). It seems more like an automobile development than a pedestrian friendly streetscape.
There is supposed to be a “Jason’s Deli” in Phase One, though I’m not sure if that’s in the first floor of the office building, hotel, or gym.

As far as auto-friendliness goes, more retail would make this space more connected, but I think that will come in some of the later phases. I don’t think the entire project needs to have a retail footprint in every corner.
I would add though… I think the fact that all three buildings in phase 1 share a parking garage puts this project lightyears ahead of Gowdy Field on the other side of the train tracks. They’ve got three medium-size buildings, and each one has a massive seperate parking lot in between. It’s a suburban-style office park. Huge waste of space and a missed opportunity for denser development. Hopefully we’ll see more infill there in the future…

I drive by Gowdy Field every day. And every day, I have been thinking the exact same thing, Walker. They could easily build at least three more buildings where the parking lots currently are (or will be). The old Big Bear Warehouse still exists behind these buildings. Why couldn’t they demolish it and put all of the parking in that space?
Walker, the Jason’s Deli is going in the first floor of my future office building but I’m not sure any other retail will be there when it first opens. I’m hoping a local brew pub or similarly alcohol-related business leases space in Phase I…
