Hounddog’s Sucks

By: Walker

Ok, let me first start off by saying that I loves me some Hounddog’s pizza. I’ve been a fairly regular customer there for years and their pizza is some of my favorite in town.

That being said, I had one of the worst experiences there EVER tonight. I hung out with some friends and we decided to go grab some pizza around 2 to beat the bar crowd and crazy drunks. We got to hounddog’s a few minutes before two and sat down and placed an order a few minutes later. Some soft drinks, some appetizers and a simple pepperoni pizza. We got our drinks within 2 minutes, and then sat and talked and hung out. About a half an hour later we notice that the table beside us is getting their pizza and they came in shortly after we did. I got up to ask the waitress how much longer we’d have to wait right as she was bringing out the appetizers. She got very defensive for some reason and started clammoring about how “it’s not my fault” and said the their order-tracking system is all done by hand and can be slow and whatnot. Ok! Just asking how much longer we’re going to have to wait.

So, we ate our appetizers and waited about another 20 minutes. During this time we saw another 4 or 5 tables get served, all of which were MORE people who arrived after us. I asked the waitress again how much longer for our pepperoni pizza because if it wasn’t coming we’d just pay for our appetizers and leave. She again said “it’s not MY fault” and said that she saw our pizza in there and was going to get it for us. So I sat back down. She walked in the kitchen and came back out to take someone else’s drink orders and wipe down some other tables. I turned to my friends and said that if she comes back out again without our pizza or saying anything to us, we’re leaving. Needless to say, she came back out with no pizza. I threw down 5 bucks on the table to cover our food and shitty service and we left.

On the way out into the parking lot our classy waitress chased us down yelling “Hey! Hey!” I turned to see what the problem was and she was all upset that we were leaving without paying or cancelling our order. I told her that I threw money on the table and she said she didn’t see that. A few seconds later some punk kids come out of the back of Hounddog’s and she immediately tells them “don’t worry about it, it’s not necessary”. What? Is there any other restaurant in town that can give their customers the worst service of their lives and then try to intimidate them with hired goons? What the fuck?

So anyway, she was carrying on about how our order was coming up and again stating that none of this was HER fault. I told her that I wasn’t specifically blaming her for anything, but shitty service is shitty service and if they’re not going to serve us a pizza we can go find food somewhere else. I told her we had been there nearly an hour and twenty minutes and she said “I’ve not even been here working that long.” So now she’s calling me a liar. Anne chimed in with the fact that this girl was NOT checking on our table at all. She said “I refilled your drinks” which occured one time after I checked on the food after the 30 minute mark and she brought out the appetizers. That’s the only time she acknowledged our presence after taking our order.

I wouldn’t have been so upset if she would have given us a status update here and there about where the hell our pizza dissapeared to. I know that when things go wrong in the kitchen it’s not always the waitress’s fault, but when we’re virtually being ignored at our table, you can’t really get much worse in terms of service than that.

Anyway, I know better than to expect Hounddog’s to be a classy joint with trained staff capible of handling upset customers, but the whole GOON thing at the end of the night really pissed me off to no end. Any other restaurant in Columbus would be showering you with apologies and comped bills in hopes of bringing you back to try their place again… not chasing you out the door with fucking GOONS to try to intimidate you. What in the holy hell is this place thinking?

Needless to say, Hounddog’s has lost four regular customers tonight. I love their pizza a ton, but it’s not worth the drama, the shitty service, and dealing with people who have no idea what they’re doing. I’m not there to listen to a waitress point fingers and play the blame game. I’m just trying to put pizza in my belly and if you don’t want my business I can take it elsewhere.

  • You want to know what I’ve always wondered?

Why McDonalds doesn’t serve breakfast 24/7 (or at least the entire time they’re open). I know they are already loaded and all, but I gotta think that’d be a huge injection of new business…like me, who wouldn’t eat there otherwise.

  • Walker wrote Perhaps in the old Long’s Bookstore building?

i heard that was going to be Mianis pt 2.

i think we need an IHOP. there is a perfect place for one on high st, north of lane ave, north of the library and dominos. it used to be some asian grocery store or something like that. its got the old school IHOP look… the blue A-Frame.

  • Oh, you mean the place that USED TO BE AN IHOP?

  • oh snap. yup, thats the place. i had no idea that used to be an ihop. do you know when it was?

  • I have had problems with the waitresses, but not with the time it takes to get my food. When I go I usually go with a group and get ton of food, so we expect it to take awhile to get our food. Like I said the waitresses. Around X-mas time I went in there with a group of friends and I had to ask her to speak up about three times (I’m slightly hard of hearding and we were in the Rav. Room) she turned around and as she walked away she called me a dumb bitch. I of-course didn’t hear it, but my husband and two other friends heard it. I’m not one to handle that so when she came back I asked her what she had said when she walked from the table and she denied everything. Needless to say we didn’t tip to well that night. Then, we went on St. Patty’s day on a spur of the moment thing… we sat on the “old” side and we were pretty much ignored for a good 10 mintues. We went and got our own drinks from the bar. Our waitress came over and pretty much scolded us for getting our own drinks and took our order. All our drinks were empty. So, she walked away and we got our own again. Finally she stayed on top of us and made sure we got our refills and all that crap. That wasn’t as bad as our X-mas trip, but come on. I’m going to get my own damn drink if you aren’t going to!

We get carryout once in awhile if we are going to be in the area, but I don’t plan to go back inside to sit anytime soon.

I have no idea… looks like the old style building though… I first went to OSU in 1998 and it wasn’t an IHOP then… anyone else know?

  • i went there for the first time last Saturday night. Did not have a bad experience. Food was greasy, waitress personality was nonexistant, but didn’t have issues with service or timeliness of service. We’ll see on trip 2 pehaps tomorrow night.

  • Could someone go back to Hounddog’s to see if it still such a creepy place ????

  • There was a story on Channel 6 about 2 men being assaulted outside of Hound Dog’s on Saturday night. I can’t find any links to it, but the implication was that it was a gay bashing and the several employees were involved.
