Hillary Clinton energized several hundred of her supporters this morning at the Columbus Athenaeum with a campaign stop that focused primarily on women’s issues. After a rousing introduction by Columbus City Councilmember Jaiza Page, Clinton took to the microphone to talk about pay equality, income inequality, and made promises to raise the minimum wage.
“Women are not getting equal pay for equal work,” she stated. “Too many women are trying to balance family with work without any help at all. Having women in the workforce is not a luxury — it’s a necessity.”
Clinton said that too many families in America suffer because of the high cost of childcare and healthcare. She said that if elected president, she would work to improve paid leave opportunities for both men and women with newborns.
“If we don’t support families, we can’t have the kind of country that we want,” she said.
While Clinton said that college affordability is a priority for improvement, she also wanted to see options for those with existing college debt to be able to refinance and pay it off in a responsible and forgiving fashion.
“We have work to do to make America work again,” she said to applause.
While campaign supporters gathered inside, several small groups of protesters took to the sidewalks on Fourth Street outside. One group was focused on anti-abortion viewpoints, while the other was a group of Bernie Sanders supporters, showing their preference for another high profile Democratic candidate.
