Anand Saha would like to buy a parcel of land and build a new location that would house both of his growing businesses, Vienna Ice Café and Mozart’s Bakery and Piano Café, but he needs your help. He found out about the Mission: Small Business program sponsored by Chase and LivingSocial and submitted an application to hopefully be awarded a grant. The program will be awarding up to 12 individual grants of $250,000 to 12 small businesses across the United States.
With his application submitted, he needs community support and your votes. He needs to reach 250 votes to have his application be eligible to be viewed by the judges. When eligible, the businesses will be reviewed by a panel of small-business experts who will select the final Grant Recipients.
“My goal is to have a huge, awesome patio,” says Saha. “This grant would help us secure the rest of the funding necessary for this project, and it would create jobs for the Clintonville neighborhood.”
To vote for Mozart’s, you must first visit the Mission: Small Business site and click the ‘log in with your Facebook account’ button. There is no other log in option besides Facebook. Once logged in, search for Mozart’s Bakery & Piano Cafe to vote.
The voting period ends: June 30, 2012, 11:59pm eastern time.
Anand shared with us his plans for the new 3,000 square foot building with patio space. Designs are by Tim Lai ArchitecT.

I voted for them and about 10 other local places. If you put in Columbus, OH you will see a pretty interesting mix of businesses some also popular on CU. They are giving out 12 grants of $250k nationwide.
The 250 vote hurdle seems very low. Not a big fan of facebook marketing, but if that gimmick gets some local businesses a chance at some $$$$ I will click away.
250k for 12 businesses nationwide?
they should have made the grant smaller,so more folks have a shot.
It will come down to the merit of the individual business plans as the 250 vote requirement will hardly cull any active small business with a customer base. I am not sure a desire for expansion or a huge, awesome patio really sets Mozart’s apart from the rest of the herd. I gave them a vote regardless.
Thank you everyone for your support. Just to explain a bit more, we’ve got a lot picked out where we’d like to be able to build a location large enough for both Mozart’s and Vienna Ice Cafe. Mozart’s has outgrown its space (probably did years ago) and a larger building is necessary. While we’ve loved our location for the past 17 years, it’s time to take the next steps. This grant would help create new jobs in Clintonville as well as build a gorgeous business to take the place of a currently empty lot. We know that it’s a long shot to get the grant, and we appreciate your votes to help.
Please feel free to ask any other questions. And thank you again for the support.
Where would the new building be located?
The building would be in Clintonville, but I’m not comfortable right now saying the land we’re hoping for, simply since the money and funding isn’t in place yet. It would be not too far from the current Mozart’s, though.
Unless they have already purchased the land, it would probably be unwise to say. If the present owner sees there is a marked interest (ie the schematic designs) the price could very well go up.
I love Mozarts, best of luck! (Even if it’s a long shot)
Please don’t do a one-story single-use building. Clintonville desperately needs more density: three- and even four-story mixed-use buildings with apartments for young people and aging empty-nesters.
There are multiple Columbus businesses trying for this. The 250 votes just makes the business eligible to be in the running. Crazy Goat Coffee in Gahanna is also looking for votes. So please share the wealth and vote!
dont forget varment guard lol
Voted Local, I love Mozart’s but my waistline doesn’t!
Mozart’s still needs some votes to get to 250 if you can help out!
Rivet, Wholly Craft, Big Rock Little Rooster, The French Loaf, Rain Brothers, Sprout Soup, Magnolia Thunderpussy, Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel, Rose Bredl design, Camelot Cellars Winery, One20Farm, r design & printing co., Mary Catherine’s Antiques,
Wyandotte Winery got enough votes and is in the running.
There seems to be so much empty real estate in Clintonville. Can’t you find some place else to occupy rather than build something new? Couldn’t you spend the money you’d use to rebuild to renovate instead?
Jodi, Thank you for your comment. After renting for mamy many years, it’s in my best interest to own my own property. I love my neigborhood and am willing to invest in it. I’m hoping that absentee landlords see the risks that I’m willing to take and in turn start investing and updating their properties.
Looks like this may be the new spot:
“Anand Saha said he is in contract to purchase vacant land at 3130-34 N. High St. in Clintonville, known as the “Old Hollenback Property” across the street from Nancy’s Home Cooking. The site was once home to The Booster.”
