Columbus Square Shopping Center, at Cleveland Avenue and Dublin-Granville Road, has become a haven for ethnic restaurants. Boris and Tatiana Vilenchuk and Sasha Belychev are recreating a traditional Russian dining room and nightclub called Hawa Russia.
The store’s exterior still bears a decidedly Asian silhouette, inside are all-white tablecloths and traditional elements, such as Khokhloma artwork, shawls by Pavlov Posad and murals by a local Russian artist, Alexandra Kruglyak.
And the menu is a walk through Russian cooking styles, from appetizers such as Kavkazian Bastruma and meat and vegetable pirozhki, through blinis and borscht, to entrees such as veal Pozharskiy and salmon kulbyaka. Appetizers are $5 to $9 and entrees are $9 to $22.

The Russians are coming

I left for Russia exactly one year ago yesterday.
Who wants to go here with me? It’s sure to be heavy on sour cream and dill!
Either way – I am dying for that smell of dill and meat, which I came to loathe after a month in Russia. Funny how nostalgia changes things.
Also, I am curious, “Hawa” looks like H-A-W-A in english, however in cyrillic, those letters would be pronounced N-A-SH-A. In Russian, наш (“nash”) means “our” – наша (“nasha”) is the feminine declention. So, наша Россия is “Our Russia”. Cute! Completely unoriginal! Totally Russian!
See you at наша Россия (“nasha” “Rosiyeh”)
I know of the owners through my fiance, and I must say they are very nice people and deeply rooted in the local Russian culture. I’ll definitely be checking this place out, especially since Russian is one type of dish I have never had before.

Thanks for the lesson on how to say it! One the Cheesecake Factory post, I mentioned maybe a group brunch? I’d love to check it out, especially with someone who knows something about Russion cuisine. I love dill and sour cream, so I’m all in. Maybe Sunday the 22nd? Do you suppose they’d let us bring in our own chilled bottles of vodka? j/k. sort of…
Don’t know that I’ve had a lot of Russian food, but I’m definitely up for trying new things! I assume based on the article that it’s going into the building that used to be a Mark Pis, right next to Smackie’s? Or is it the larger building over closer to 161 next to the bar?
I’d be up for a group brunch there.
There’s a lurker here (a good friend of mine) who’s wife is from Uzbekistan and is very familiar with Russian cuisine. I’m curious as to what she thinks of the place, but she’s out of the country and I don’t believe she’ll be back in the US by the 22nd.
Will the restaurant be open by then? I didn’t see anything in the article about a grand opening date? Or is it already open?
Aha — that solves it. I was looking at the name of the restaurant, wondering whether it was some weird Asian/Russian fusion thing. The W-to-ш transliteration hadn’t clicked.
I’m in for a visit.
We have a girl that temps for us on some days who is Russian, so I will tell her about it since she has been looking for places to eat featuring East European cooking. She should give a pretty good review of the place.
I drove by it today to scope which of the two possible locations it was in (it’s in the building closer to 161, right next to Whiskey Dick’s). It’s funny, because the sign on the back of the building (facing Columbus Square) says something like “Euro Deli”, so I wasn’t sure it’s the right place – but the sign on the 161 side confirmed “Hawa Russia”.
And below that was a tarp-sign proclaiming “Now Open Lunch and Dinner”.
I didn’t get out and try to actually go in, but it does appear to be open…
