Back for a third consecutive year, the Gateway Film Center is hosting a 24-hour Groundhog Day Marathon beginning at 12:01AM on Thursday, February 2nd. Groundhog Day will be shown every two hours from 12:01AM to 10:00PM Thursday evening. Tickets are $6 for one screening or for the entire marathon. Those who complete the marathon by staying the entire 24 hours will win a year’s worth of movie tickets courtesy of the Gateway Film Center. The Martini Shot Bistro located inside of the Gateway Film Center will have food and drink specials throughout the day for those attending the marathon or just an individual screening.

Groundhog Day was released in 1993 and was a financial and critical success and in the years since has continued to garner praise for not only Bill Murray’s performance but also the film’s underlying ‘spiritual’ message of self-improvement masterfully masked by its comedic attributes. The National Film Preservation Board added Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day to the National Film Registry in 2006 after deeming it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Bill Murray portrays Phil Connors; a pessimistic, disillusioned, and generally unpleasant Pittsburgh weatherman assigned to cover the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA. Saddled with his sweet-as-saccharin producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and his sarcastic cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott) they all grudgingly finish their assignment but are snowed in while trying to leave town and are forced to spend the night. Phil awakes the next morning ready to immediately leave town but is shocked to find out that it’s once again Groundhog Day and no one but him recollects the previous day’s events. Day after day Phil awakens to find it’s once again Groundhog Day and solve the mystery as to why he’s living the same day over and order.
