Girl Talk’s Sunday Night Show – Photos & Review

By: Belinda Heiman

You may ask yourself what and who is this Girl Talk and what is all the rage about? There is only one answer… it is all about raging. Girl Talk is a one-man performance that breathes entertainment. This DJ mixes popular songs to entertain a young crowd eager to dance the night away.

Sunday marked GT’s second appearance at the Newport concert hall on High Street. After the quick sell out of his first show on Saturday, Girl Talk decided to play a second night, which also sold out within days.

After a few opening acts, fans anxiously chanted “Girl Talk” for nearly 20 minutes before he arrived on stage.

Excited faces packed together shoulder to shoulder in front of the backstage doors, hoping to be among the first of the fans to be invited on stage. As soon as Girl Talk opened his show with “Stay Fly” by Three 6 Mafia, fans rushed the stage and began to wild out. They fed off Girl Talk’s energy as much as he feeds off theirs. In fact, GT gets so into the party that he literally dances on his table and crowd surfs into the fans’ arms. His energy levels continue to rise all night, as do the fans’. Glow sticks and colorful attire fill the venue creating an electric atmosphere.

Fans leave the Newport so sweaty that for once the cold Ohio snow is a blessing.

  • I don’t get it…
When that dude surfs the web, thousands of hipsters come out of the woodwork and frolic. when i surf the web, my cat just comes by and claws me.

  • Agreed. I have 2 of his albums and while they are interesting to listen to (in the “Hey, that’s old smashing pumpkins mixed with c+c music factory mixed with lil wayne!” kind of way), I can’t imagine how you dance to so many time changes in such broken up songs.

I wanted to like this guy as an artist for his dj transitioning ability, I just don’t see how it could be so amazing live when the whole thing is transitions. Then again, I didn’t go, so I wouldn’t feel totally comfortable acting like I know it all.

  • I tried to listen and it just made me feel old, as in “those kids and their music today” old…didn’t get it at all.

  • In live shows the mixes are quite a bit longer so you can get into some semblance of a flow.

  • Vuch, I’m with you. Interesting music to listen to in a geeky way, but I guess I’m not enough of a hip hop head to really be that into the guy. I’d love it if his genre mixes were a little more diverse, but when you’ve got hip hop lyrics blasting over top of everything that’s all I manage to hear.

  • Girl talk may mix in tracks at a rather fast clip however the tempo never misses a beat. As for a diverse mix of music I’m not sure you can find someone who has a more diverse record collection put to use. taking samples from metal, indie rock, hip hop, and electronic music and sewing them all into a constant flow. His albums mix just about everything that I enjoy in one place. From whet my dad and older sister jammed to whats on the radio today. All that and his track selection kind of follows a booty house kind of feel. It seems like some of you folks need to not only listen to his work more, but also a little closer and you may realize exactly how diverse of a crowd he reaches.

That said I heard the show was the best some locals have been to and from the pics it seems like the party of the year thus far. I really like the fact he knew what was in store and covered his laptop with cling wrap and just rocked out. a truly epic way to start 09 in bustown.

As for coremod if the shoe fits wear a hat at the diner table! lol

  • I gave both Night Ripper and Feed the Animals a few spins. I can appreciate the talent that goes into the mixes and mashups, and I’ve heard nothing but positive things about his fun live shows. I guess I just don’t like hip hop party music enough to be that into it, as it seems to dominate most all of his work. Just a matter of personal taste, that’s all.

  • as a serious contestant for “oldest guy in the Newport” at Saturday night’s show, I have to say his act is amazing. As Brent already stated, in the live performance he allows the samples to stretch out further, allowing more continuity. this was really appreciated in songs like Hands in the Air, when the overlap between Tag-Team’s “Whoomp [there it is]” and Big Country’s “In a Big Country” went on for minutes. i also think some of the smaller clips don’t always make an appearance in the live show. the trick of his music is not transitions, I could do that with a casio tape recorder and some old cassettes, but to make all those transitions build up, flow into and seamlessly through each other. it is quite possible for the 35+ crowd to dance to it (so long as you stand near the back of the room in a breathable space)

  • When we roadtrip, we play what we call ‘The Radio Game.’ It involves letting the radio run on scan. While it also involves all sorts of crazy evolving rules about identification, sing alongs and certain songs, Girl Talk comes across the same way to me.

I can see the craft as opposed to the randomness of scan, but it still washes over me the same way.

Eons ago, I used to have illicit tapes (then CDs) from a guy named John Oswald whose ‘Plunderphonic’ style involved intricate mixing. “Plexure” was 20 minutes of 10 yrs of pop music. Before that Genesis P Orridge did “cut-ups” but these people had more wanky philosophical pretensions instead of just laying down a party track.

    I feel old.

    A.

  • This show was everything I hoped it’d be and more! people were out to have a great time and gt was out with some killer beats. it was awesome, and I hope we see more of this here in c-bus.

it’s about time to educate the younger generation on the finer points of crowd surfing–i personally caught 3 ill-fated surfers… dam kids!

Can anyone compare to the GT show to the Sweatin or Get Right shows that happen here on a regular basis? They seem like they’d have the same crowd and same party vibe.

  • the show on sunday was awesome! as brent said earlier, live the mixes are a bit longer so it makes for a huge dance party! GT samples music from so many genres. I can’t wait until he comes back here!! Best Dance Party Ever!!!!

  • not a huge fan of current hip hop. i dig the older mashup mixes from rad and quick or dj hernia. i bet core rock would remember this one, THE FORMULA. mixed and produced locally about 15 or 16 years ago. nothing like mobb deep mashed up with phil collins.

  • Walker-  The GT show, Sweatin, and Get Right have a lot of similarities with the crowd and vibe (although the GT crowd is definitely younger). The big difference though is the music, GT’s stuff is 100% pop and you’d be hard-pressed to find a few unrecognizable songs.  I can’t say the same personally about Get Right and Sweatin.

  • Well then. It sounds like Sweatin & Get Right are even better events than going to see GT. ;)

  • i’m with core.  you kids get off my lawn!!

seriously, this smells like disco to me.  punk scene to the rescue?
