Get Ready for Grilling at Thurn’s Specialty Meats

By: Walker

CMH Gourmand has a great summertime post up on his blog featuring Thurn’s Specialty Meats: “If you are going to grill meat at some point this summer and you care about the person(s) you grill for then you need to make a trip the Thurn’s Specialty Meats – commonly know as Thurn’s. Most of us have not had exposure to a true butcher shop – this place is the real deal – they cut, chop, cure, smoke and do all things meat processing in their no frills shop.”

  • i am always amazed when i meet columbusites who have never heard of, or been to, Thurns! go there now!!

just start with the hot dogs, some ham salad, and maybe a 1/4 pound of sliced servalot. you’ll be hooked.

  • went there yesterday.  These guys make the meat counter at your local grocery look like a joke.  Truly old-school.

  • I will admit, they have the best jalepeno sausage I have ever had…..It is a must try!

  • I really need to get down there to check this place out. ;) On my list of “things I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t don yet” items.

  • I’m not a big fan of cured or smoked meats – do they carry unadulterated cuts of meat?

  • I have always been scared of this place due to it’s location but pass it daily.
We’ll have to go in and stop being so bitchy.

  • The location – is actually very convenient right off of the freeway shortly after 315 merges into 71 (heading south).  As for unadulterated cuts of meat – if is was once an animal – Thurns probably has it in any form. And if not, and you call to ask, they will slice, dice, cut or grind something that will please your carnivore heart.  There are customers that have been going to Thurns for generations – there is a reason for that.

  • I had to get an ID Just to weigh in on this.  Thurns was making sausage at the old Central Market (The Bus Station replaced it in the early ’70s)  when your Great Great Grandfathers were in diapers.  I spend as much time dreaming about their porc as I spend @ the poultry shop.  Truly one of the best places in the World. Cold-cuts and braunsweiger to kill for.

  • A very sweet and deserving friend told me about their “fresh side”.  It’s bacon’s uncured cousin.   No nitrates/nitrites and no smoky flavor–for those delicate applications.  Not always available, but ask for it and ask them how to prep it–you won’t be sad!
