Paula McClain, who quickly climbed bestseller lists with her debut novel, The Paris Wife, reads from her new historical novel, Circling the Heat, on Wednesday, Sept. 2. McClain tells the story of Beryl Markham, an extraordinary woman who grows up to become a word-class aviator—and the center of a passion-filled love triangle.

Next is Karin Slaughter, an international bestselling author of more than 20 novels. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Slaughter will read from Pretty Girls, a chilling psychological thriller about two sisters who become estranged after the sudden disappearance of their third sister. When 20 years later one of their husbands is murdered, the two establish an unlikely truce as they seek to uncover the truth.

Following Slaughter is essayist Sloane Crosley, acclaimed author of I Was Told There’d Be Cake. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Crosley debuts her first novel, The Clasp, about three friends in their late 20s who reunite at a wedding and embark on a country-hopping adventure.

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the series takes a turn for the magical. Gregory Maguire, the bestselling author of Wicked, reads from After Alice, a new and unique twist on the classic tale. After Alice follows the adventures of Ada, a friend of Alice’s mentioned briefly in the original story, who, after tumbling down the rabbit-hole herself, embarks on an odyssey to bring Alice home.

Bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger follows Maguire on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a reading from Ghostly: A Collection of Ghost Stories. Ghostly is an anthology of the best ghost stories of all time, featuring Niffenegger’s original illustrations and a chilling new story by the author herself.

Jason Gay, a sports columnist for The Wall Street Journal, wraps up the series on Thursday, Nov. 19, with Little Victories: Perfect Rules for Imperfect Living. As described by the author: “There’s a way to experience life that does not involve a phone, a tablet, a TV. Like the title says, I want us all to achieve little victories.”

All Evenings with Authors events are held at the Columbus Museum of Art. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., each event opens with the author reading an excerpt from their book, followed by a Q&A. Each evening ends with a coffee and cookies reception and an opportunity to buy the author’s book(s) and have them signed. Thurber House also offers Author’s Tables dinners beginning at 6 p.m. at Thurber Center, where a limited number of attendees can have dinner with the author, get reserved seating at the event and have their book signed.

Tickets can be purchased online, in person at Thurber House, via telephone at 614-464-1032 and at the door the evening of the event. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit Thurberhouse.org.

GCAC Presents is a bi-weekly column brought to you by the Greater Columbus Arts Council – supporting art and advancing culture in Columbus – in partnership with the Columbus Arts Marketing Association, a professional development and networking association of arts marketers.
