GCAC Presents: ProMusica Presents Classical Comedy

One of the hottest topics in the classical music world today is bringing in new audiences, which is certainly something that we are always thinking about here at ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. We all want to share this powerful music with everyone -not just with those who are in-the-know and well educated in all things orchestral. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the industry.

ProMusica musicians and staff alike are waiting anxiously on the edge of our seats for the incredibly talented violin and piano duo of Igudesman & Joo to join the orchestra for a one-night-only event that is sure to be full of moving beautiful music AND lots of laughs. They’ll be bringing their hilariously theatrical show “BIG Nightmare Music” to Columbus for ProMusica’s annual Soirée on February 13th, which is our biggest party (and fundraiser) of the year. These guys can do it all: from impeccable comedic timing and slapstick humor, to astonishing musical virtuosity singing and playing their instruments better than most.

Classical musicians are often unjustly accused of taking themselves too seriously. But the comedic classical musician duo Igudesman & Joo are certainly not at all guilty of that, and their collective dream is to make classical music accessible to a wider and younger audience. They are musicians with a love of comedy and theatre, here to shake up classical music—and ProMusica enjoys having the opportunity to bring in exciting artists that like to mix it up—remember last year’s Soirée with the genre-defying Time for Three?

Wondering how classical music can be funny? Igudesman & Joo don’t actually make fun of the music; but they make fun with the music…and I almost guarantee you will recognize at least a few of the tunes that they work with in their mash-ups. If your curiosity is peaked, check out Igudesman & Joo on YouTube, where their clips have gathered over 28 million hits.

So we’ve made it past the hardest part of the winter: the shortest day of the year. By February we are all itching to get out of the house and have a fun time. Don’t worry about your knowledge (or lack thereof) of concert etiquette, and come on out to the Southern Theatre. You won’t be worrying about when it’s okay to clap or not—you’ll probably be laughing so hard that none of that will even cross your mind.

Join ProMusica Chamber Orchestra for a night of laughs at our Soiree Concert, featuring Igudesman & Joo: BIG Nightmare Music! Friday, February 13 at the Southern Theatre. Tickets start at $28. And if you’re interested in a party, patron packages are available to attend the benefit at the Westin Columbus before the concert; all proceeds going to support ProMusica’s artistic and education programs.
