GCAC Presents: Nine Grammys, 30 Recordings with the Emerson String Quartet

What’s great about chamber music? It’s the intimacy. It’s the vibe. It’s the sense that each musician is a soloist—but yet that each musician is a vital component, dependent upon the others in the ensemble.

Watch a small chamber ensemble perform and you sense a special connection. There is no conductor standing in front and beating time with a baton. No. Rather each member is counting—tapping a foot perhaps. And each member, almost by magic, comes in at the right moment, exactly on beat. Sometimes one of the musicians may play with closed eyes, but never mind because the hands are moving all the same.

Unique instruments is what chamber groups are! For each musician contributes a combination of talent, experience and love of the music. Each is qualified to be a soloist. Many are. But then they come together to join their skills to create harmonies together so that the music is more than the sum of its parts. The Emerson Quartet offers a brilliant illustration of this point for they have a unique approach to performance: their first and second violinists actually alternate chairs. This approach of playing different parts in different performances keeps their music fresh and exciting while the intimacy of their performances is based on an ability to pass tiny rhythmic motifs around the group.

We all want to hear the best, to see the best—and the best is what the Emerson offers Columbus audiences! In January of this year, this award winning ensemble received Chamber Music America’s highest honor, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award for significant and lasting contributions to the field of chamber music. They were inducted into the Classical Music Hall of fame in 2010. With nine Grammy and the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, the Emerson promises an evening of brilliant music.

Come early to catch a live interview with Emerson members as WOSU midday host, Jennifer Hambrick, chats with the musicians at 7pm, Saturday, April 25th on stage at The Southern Theatre. Beginning at 8pm the evening’s performance will include works by Purcell, Haydn, Britten and Beethoven and tickets are available from CAPA (614) 469-0939 with a 25% discount by using the discount code UNDERGROUND.
