GCAC Presents: German Village Art Crawl Turns Garages into Galleries

Who throws an art festival in a neighborhood alley? German Village, that’s who. A couple of years back, some residents had the crazy idea to turn several garages along Macon Alley into art galleries for a unique one-night event. They asked homeowners along the alley for permission. They sent out invites to some of the area’s finest painters, sculptors, pottery makers, woodworkers and jewelers. And to make the evening extra special, they brought in food and drink from various Village restaurants and live music. The result was a grand success! So much so that the German Village Art Crawl is an annual event now celebrating its thirteenth season!

This year, the Art Crawl takes place this Saturday, July 19 from 5-9 p.m. along Macon Alley between Whittier and Frankfort Streets. The work of 30-35 artists whose styles echo the creative spirit and diversity of German Village will be on display for sale. These guys and gals are good—very good—some of the best talents in the area. But let’s be honest, like all art, some of it you’ll absolutely love, some of it you won’t, and some of it will completely confuse you.

But isn’t that the real beauty of art, the magic of seeing that one special piece that speaks to you on a personal level? Even if you don’t find that one special piece, chatting with the artists about their work is a fun and memorable, too. And if you’re the curious kind who enjoys peeking behind the curtain to see the creative process at work, several artists will be offering live demonstrations in pottery and mask making.

But, of course, great art isn’t just found on canvas, metal and clay. All along the alley, music will fill the air with performances by Anna & The Consequences, Ruvane, Dan Heidt and The Devil Doves. And what’s a party without food and drink. This year will be especially tantalizing thanks to the creative kitchens of Barcelona Restaurant, Sidecar Catering, Juergen’s Bakery, Kolache Republic, Two Caterers and others.

So, join us on Saturday, July 19 from 5-9pm, rain or shine. Tickets are just $20 and can be purchased at the gate or in advance the German Village Meeting Haus at gvbusinesscommunity.com. Come celebrate one of the signature events of the German Village business community and enjoy and evening of fun, friendship and creativity.
