GCAC Presents: Discover a Bit of the Unexpected with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra

Orchestral music is everywhere, whether we realize it or not—heard on television shows and advertisements, in grocery stores, in videogame soundtracks, and during the most poignant moments of favorite movies. You hear orchestras every day, but how often do you take advantage of the opportunity to hear (and see!) one live?

Columbus is proudly home to one of America’s finest professional chamber orchestras, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, nationally recognized for its high artistic quality and made up of virtuoso musicians from all over the country. A chamber orchestra gives you a bit of a different experience than attending a full symphony orchestra concert.

ProMusica is made up of only about 35 musicians (depending on what they are playing) performing in a rather small venue. The Southern Theatre, ProMusica’s home, only seats about 900 people and there’s not a bad seat in the house. In this intimate space, you can easily see the musicians’ faces—catching the emotions in their expressions as they play with one another, and be inspired by the thrill the conductor is feeling.

Do you imagine attending a concert of musicians dressed in overly formal attire such as tuxes and tails? ProMusica’s musicians, some as young as in their 20s, reflect their personal style in their all black attire. Imagine a stuffy European waving the baton? Okay, our 34-year-old music director is Austrian, but he has an infectious enthusiasm about him. Frequently clad in a well-tailored suit with a skinny tie and dark-rimmed glasses, he has an insatiable sense of humor, a laugh you can hear from miles away, and a warm personality–paired with incredible artistic integrity and holds the highest standards for the musicians he leads.

Afraid you don’t know enough about what’s going on at a classical concert? That’s ok, you don’t really need to know to enjoy! But, Music Director David Danzmayr has a marvelous knack for introducing pieces of music by lesser-known composers or new modern compositions in a way that is comforting and frequently leaves audiences even more transfixed by those pieces than by their old favorites. And not to worry—there are notes in the program to study up if you feel the need.

More than anything, Danzmayr wants audience members to enjoy the concert, and for ProMusica to present something special every time. It’s clear in the excitement and passion he brings to each performance. It is an experience to see 30-some musicians working together, telling stories through the music they create, and producing an incredible range of sounds.

Think it’s too expensive to attend? Tickets start at $12, so for a couple to hear incredible live music—a unique performance—it’s about the same price as seeing a movie!

Try something new for your next date night, and you might just find your new favorite local band.

Join ProMusica to kick off its 2014-2015 season on Opening Night, October 12, at 7:00pm at the Southern Theatre (21 E. Main Street). Visit ProMusicaColumbus.org for details or call 614.464.0066.
