GCAC Presents: A Concert and Conversation with Classical Music Power Trio David Finckel, Wu Han and David Shifrin

Many classical musicians can accomplish a lot with only 10 fingers. But somehow the 30 fingers of globe- and cybertrotting cellist David Finckel, pianist Wu Han and clarinetist David Shifrin accomplish far more than three times what most other classical trios can. Chamber Music Columbus presents three of the world’s most dynamic classical musicians in a performance of music by Beethoven, Bruch, and Brahms Saturday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Southern Theatre. Starting at 7 p.m., the artists will also join me and members of the audience for a pre-concert conversation.

    Finckel, Han and Shifrin

Recently named Musical America’s Musicians of the Year and dubbed “classical music’s power couple” by the Wall Street Journal, the husband-wife team of Emerson String Quartet cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han continue their skyrocketing careers as movers and shakers in the classical music world. As artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the California’s Music@Menlo festival, Finckel and Han have for years cris-crossed the U.S. giving world-class chamber music performances and training the next generation of classical musicians in master classes. David Finckel and Wu Han’s performance in Columbus this month comes on the heels of the inaugural season of Seoul, South Korea’s Chamber Music Today music festival, for which Finckel and Han serve as artistic directors.

Finckel and Han have also changed the complexion of chamber music through their online presence as two of the world’s most electronically accessible classical musicians. In Cello Talks, an online series of videorecorded mini cello lessons, Finckel offers expert advice on cello technique for amateur and aspiring professional cellists around the world. The pair also maintain a vibrant blog featuring stories of broader interest to classical music lovers and updated regularly as their performances take them to all corners of the globe. These initiatives supplement Finckel and Han’s work as leaders of ArtistLed, the first musician-directed and Internet-based recording company, which they founded in 1997.

The winner of the top prize at the Munich and Geneva International Competitions, the recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize and a litany of honors for his recordings, clarinetist David Shifrin is in constant demand as a performer. Before joining the faculty of the Yale University School of Music in 1987, David Shifrin held faculty positions at the Juilliard School, the University of Michigan, and the Cleveland Institute of music, among other noted institutions, and in 2007 was awarded an honorary professorship at China’s Central Conservatory in Beijing. David Shifrin has been affiliated with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, serving as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004. David Shifrin is also the recipient of a Solo Recitalists’ Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Music Academy of the West.

    Don’t miss this dynamic trio!

David Finckel, Wu Han and David Shifrin perform Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m., with pre-concert conversation at 7 p.m., at the Southern Theatre, 21 East Main Street at South High Street, Columbus.
