Trimming expenses is the name of the game for a growing number of Central Ohioans, and with gas hovering near $4 a gallon, riding bicycles, motorcycles and scooters is growing in popularity.

Getting to work on two wheels is becoming so popular that downtown workers are finding it difficult to find a place to park. But parking your scooter will get easier beginning Wednesday.

The city will open its first scooter parking lot on Gay Street between Third and High.

  • How to maximize parking in the new Gay St. spot in front of Subway/Due Amici. This photo was taken at the press conference before the new signs went up and the new lines were added to the street, but it is the spot.

    BINGO!

    Looks awesome!

I just couldn’t seem to wrap my brains around the configuration late at night on Wednesday apparently. :)

To be fair, i think those guys are parked in front of the fire hydrant. Hence the “no stopping any time” sign. Plus i’ve never parked parallel to the curb before, so it all seemed a little strange. I can get used to anything though!

I really like the icons they used for moped, scooter, and motorcycle on the signs. I need to go get a close-up photo of that sign.

So in reality, they’d be a little forward of the area shown in that picture but same parking configuration.

    I think it’s pretty cool.

I’m partial to the motorcycle one.

It kinda looks like mine. :)

The hydrant is a few feet behind the scooters. The “no stopping” is an area that extends all the way to the sign the guy is leaning on in the background.

granted, if there is a fire I wouldn’t really want by bike that close to the hydrant, but I really do not think it would hinder the fire department.

Well yeah…that freshly painted “corral” they are in seems to be the no parking area. So the actual parking space is just in front of those guys. Unless they changed it since Wednesday. When i parked there, that’s how it was set up.

motorcycle looks kinda like a late-70′s Honda XL250. sweet.

  • In the photo you can see the new green street sign pole (without the sign) on the curb. The fire hydrant is to the east of this pole. All the scooters are between the new pole and the old one (which had its sign replaced with one of the 2 wheeled motor vehical parking only signs pointing <—east). The city ground-off the old asphalt paint showing no parking and added new paint that defines the area well.

Again, the photo showed the spot before any new painting was done or signage went up.

  • Gotcha! So the actual parking area is much narrower than the space shown in the picture. That explains the fresh paint (and cones) next to the space.

Saweet. I approve of the sign-maker’s taste. :)

  • Hmmm…are they going to have to paint parallel stripes in these spots? (looks like someone tried to do that with chalk) One guy can screw it up for everyone else pretty easily. Just snapped this photo at lunch.

Still, it’s great to see the spots get used! Otherwise, it’d probably be one of these bikes per parking space.

  • Sent a LTE to the Dispatch today:

Walker in an LTE wrote Hi!

Although I’m not a scooter owner, I was thrilled to read that the Mayor’s Office and City Council are taking quick action on implementing new legal parking spaces for scooters in and around downtown. The number of scooters on the roads are multiplying quickly, and our local leadership should be applauded for taking a speedy and innovative approach to providing easy parking access for alternative transportation.

What I was not thrilled to read was the unnecessary jab at Mayor Michael Coleman for driving a car to the news conference to announce the new scooter parking measure. Our leaders do not always have to have a personal stake in the legislation that they enact, nor should we always expect them to. The cheap shot had me doing a quick double-take to make sure I was reading The Dispatch and not The Other Paper. Please stick to the facts and leave the tasteless jokes for others to make.

    Thanks,

    Walker Evans

I am not sure which is less – your knowledge or your grammar skills.

Those who monitor parking meters are employees of a different section of city government than the police.

    A.
