Trimming expenses is the name of the game for a growing number of Central Ohioans, and with gas hovering near $4 a gallon, riding bicycles, motorcycles and scooters is growing in popularity.

Getting to work on two wheels is becoming so popular that downtown workers are finding it difficult to find a place to park. But parking your scooter will get easier beginning Wednesday.

The city will open its first scooter parking lot on Gay Street between Third and High.

  • Nifty!

I’m thinking of heading up to Brioso for lunch just to check out the new parking!

  • thank you Mike and Mary Ellen.

  • YAY!!

  • YES!!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    :D

  • Kick

    Ass

    :)

  • Wow, I’ve never been excited about a parking lot before…but this actually makes me want to ride over there & patronize some Gay St. businesses!

  • glad to see they’re listening.

  • SU-WEET! no more City Center parking for me!! such a pain in the butt trying to get the sensor to recognize my bike…

  • From the Mayor’s Office:

Scooter / Motorcycle parking plan and maps attached (PDF). This is a large file (3.5MB). Please let us know if you have any further suggestions or feedback.

The properties controlled by ODOT and CDDC (670 Cap and Rich/High corner) are still being negotiated. The City does not control the properties but is advocating for parking as a use on those spots.

We’ll start striping and signing Gay Street spots today, and the rest will come on line in the next few weeks.

  • I don’t have a motorcycle or scooter but it’s really cool to see the city actually be ahead of the curve on something for once.

Looks cool. The locations outlined in that plan are great!

I hope they all can get done pretty quickly.

  • This article made fark yesterday!!!!! The headline was:

Columbus, OH to offer scooter parking on Gay Street. No, that’s not a euphemism

    +1

This actually makes me want a scooter that much more.

  • i was just over at Cafe Brioso for lunch to see the lot – no lot, but rather a couple of designated narrow parking spots. hey, it’s a start, right? but i have yet to check out the Mayor’s Parking Proposal, who must have stayed in the Gay St. area after the announcement (was seen enjoying their delicious food).

  • Ha, we must have just passed each other. Jeff@urbaninfill and I had lunch at Cafe Briosso as well and saw Mayor Mike and a couple others. Here’s a photo of the parking spot which obviously isn’t quite worked out but you could definitely fit a few bikes there.

  • haha – yeah, it was pretty packed…i was the guy with the orange tie and mustache….if you even noticed that??

in addition to that picture there is another spot at the intersection of Gay and 3rd. same size/style.

  • Funny that there’s no one parking in the designated area, but there’s two scooters on the sidewalk in the background. Ha!

Not to be greedy but that’s kind of a small space. One Harley parking parallel to the curb could fill that whole thing.

  • I’m glad to see they’ll be doing something, pending ODOT approval of course, with the large concrete pad on the Cap in the Short North. I’ve always thought that was a waste of space. Be cool if they would put some benches, etc, along with the scooter parking to spruce it up a bit.

That would be nice. Sitting on a bench…in the sun…on a sea of concrete…looking at the scooters….

    Can’t wait!
