On the way back from my jog this morning, I happened to notice that the Gay St. reconfiguration from one-way traffic to two-way traffic seems to have begun. There are lots or orange barrels and construction workers tearing up the sidewalks on Gay St. between High and Front.
Also, looks like two Gay St. businesses have closed: Skambo and Capital Photo. Hopefully the big, plastic Capital Photo sign (a real eye sore in my opinion) will come down soon as a new business takes that space.
Progress!!

I’ve noticed the corners have been ripped up on the sidewalks at Gay and High for a few weeks now, but I thought they could just be doing maintenance. Is there more ripped up now?
Yes, the corners at Gay and High have been ripped up for a while. But now, the orange barrels extend all the way down the entire block from High to Front along Gay St, and work is being done along the entire block. I suppose it is possible that it is maintenance unrelated to the Gay St. realignment, but I think there is a better chance that this may be the beginning of that project. I sure hope it is!!
Yeh and there were a lot, well a few, union labors picketing as well on Gay street. Wonder what their beef is?
There you go! ;)

LOL, thank you, that explains alot.
Those guys have been at it for over a year. Almost every single day.
Bummed about Skambo; I liked that place. With not working downtown, I didn’t make it there all that often, but I did like to stop there whenever I had some business down at the Rhodes Tower.
Anyone heard anything further about when Tip Top Kitchen is opening? I’m hoping they open up before May 31, in which case I’ll go there for my birthday.
Rumor has it that Tip Top will be open serving cocktails on Friday, but won’t have food for another week or two. I’m still confirming whether or not this is open to the public or not. Once I know more I’ll post it up! 8)
there was a myspace post from one of the owners stating that Friday is indeed opening day…it didn’t seem to imply that it was a closed party or the like.
I didn’t realize there was a project time line on the city website.

Also, confirmation that the project really has kicked off. Yes!!

Update: May 11, 2007
Starting Monday, May 14, work will begin at the northeast corner of High and Gay and stretch to Pearl Alley. Meanwhile, the current work on the north side of Gay Street will continue between Front and High Street. Workers are doing demolition work and pavement cutting to prepare for the placement of underground utilities and new traffic-signal poles.
Sidewalks will remain open, as will the outdoor seating at Café Brioso. The contractor and project managers are working with area businesses to minimize the impact of the project as much as they can.
I’m such a sucker for renderings.
I’m also glad they went with “Ultimate Makeover” rather than “Extreme Makeover: Gay Edition”.
Me too.
Anyway, it looks great. It’s amazing what a little greenery will do!
