Gay-rights group wants apology from Blackwell
Tuesday, July 25, 2006
The gay-rights group Equality Ohio called on Republican gubernatorial candidate J. Kenneth Blackwell yesterday to apologize for and retract his statement that homosexuality is a “transgression against God’s law” that can be cured.
The group also took issue with Blackwell’s digitally recorded comments in Sunday’s Dispatch comparing gays to arsonists and kleptomaniacs. Blackwell said they all can change despite what might be a genetic inclination to such behavior.
“This kind of speech is unacceptable for a public official and is divisive and offensive to hardworking Ohioans across this state,” Lynne Bowman, executive director of Equality Ohio, said in a statement.

I can’t believe he said this in a public….or at all for that matter.
they shouldn’t hold their breath on that apology. did you see the story in today’s dispatch about the republican party sending an e-mail trying to smear strickland by suggesting he and his wife are gay?
seems like they’re grasping at straws now…
That’s sad.
yeah, hating the gays was SO 2004.
In case you didn’t see the actual text, since he is now backtracking on it…
“I think homosexuality is a lifestyle, it’s a choice, and that lifestyle can be changed. I think it is a transgression against God’s law, God’s will.â€Â
“The reality is,†Blackwell continued, “that I think we make choices all the time. And I think you make good choices and bad choices in terms of lifestyle. Our expectation is that one’s genetic makeup might make one more inclined to be an arsonist, or might make one more inclined to be a kleptomaniac. Do I think that they can be changed? Yes.â€Â
It’s not even a tiny bit surprising to me that Strickland seems to have barely campaigned and is leading by 20 points or so, this guy strikes me as a cross between Bin Ladin and Hitler…say it’s an overstatement if you like, but the only difference I’m seeing so far is he doesn’t have the same amount of power. He’s an intolerant, religious zealot with eyes on the prize as far as government goes.
This quote comes to mind when I think of Blackwell.
“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” -Sinclair Lewis
It’s on a Monday, sadly.
“4 pm Protest at Ken Blackwell’s office, 180 East Broad St (at 4th)”

Yeah, I’d say that’s a huge overstatement. He’s intolerant to many people, but I don’t think he wants to round people up and put them in concentration camps.
Really, his social views are pretty run of the mill for the far-right Republicans, and if they’re all going to be compared to Hitler I think you’re really discrediting Hilter’s evil nature. The big difference between Blackwell and other extreme-right GOP is that his fiscal ideals SUCK. I’m hoping that even the gay-hating rednecks in our state that go red for the social aspects will be able to realize that Ohio’s economy is going to suck even more if Blackwell is allowed to take control. :?
I think Ohio proved in the last presidential election that this most definately is not the case.

It’s an older story, from about a year ago, but this is the guy leading the Patriot Pastors (and a little Rod Parsley) behind Blackwell…a few highlights?
-He accuses the public schools of neglecting to teach that Hitler was “an avid evolutionist”
-He considers Democrats, and even moderate Republicans as “secular jihadists” who have “hijacked” America
-”I like to say I’m not a Republican or a Democrat, I’m a Christ-o-crat,” declares Pastor Rod Parsley
-Blackwell “believes God wanted him as secretary of State during 2004″ because as such he was responsible for voting operations in a critical state during a critical election (love that one)
Sounds like the foundation for a Theocrazy in the making to me…
Oh, forgot the best quote of all from Johnson from another interview…
Describing the Ohio Gubernatoral Race…
“There is a warfare for the heart and soul of America,†says Johnson, pastor of a burgeoning fundamentalist Christian congregation in Lancaster. “This is a battle between the forces of righteousness and the hordes of hell. Millions of souls weigh in the balance and the church stands at the Critical Crossroads of history.â€Â
