Galleries combine to form Newark art hop
BY TIFFANY AUMANN
OCTOBER 15, 2008
Argyle Photography, Licking County Arts and The Works are coordinating an effort to start a regular gallery hop in downtown Newark. The first gallery walk will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with artist receptions at the three locations.
“It was all springboarded off the Art Walk,” said Liz Argyle, owner of Argyle Photography, 36 S. Third St. “I feel very fortunate to have fallen into this role (as an organizer). I believe in downtown.”
Argyle said the success of the August Art Walk event, sponsored by Cultural Alliance of Licking County, inspired her to dedicate a portion of her photography studio as a permanent gallery space. Unlike the summer event, which placed artists and their work in a variety of businesses, the art hop will be solely in dedicated gallery spaces.
Argyle said, however, she would like to see other downtown businesses remain open on event evenings to join in the fun.

Hop?
Yop.
I have 4 rooms and 3 artists in my studio so I will now officially start the Junctionview studio 112 gallery room hop. It’s going to run everyday of the month and only by appointment!
Now I’m confused. Is this part of the Short North Gallery Hop, then?
When I think Hop I think Short North… :)
My neighborhood is quickly becoming regionally recognized as one of the few places that don’t have an art hop!
KLD FTW!
Hold on to the innocence as long as you can over there in the KLD!
:)
^^^^ :)
Having spent sometime growing up around Newark, Ohio for them starting an Art walk “hop” is cool, hopefully they can get their local shoppes to remain open open for this.
If I get a free weekend I wouldn’t mind checking this out.
I don’t see an issue with this at all. We want everything to be more local, right? A Newark gallery hop is great for people living in Newark, and those who want to see work from local artists there. Of course, there’s a critical mass issue, but if the hop is successful, it should draw more galleries and shops into the mix. While the gallery hop concept is a bit overplayed in Columbus, it’s a new thing in Newark.
My bad but i’m not following your “critical mass issue” Which is?
sorry I work 2nd shift just got up and only on my 1st cup of coffee!
I think this is an exciting event for them, since newark’s nearby burbs if you will heath and hebron any of the near by areas might stop over for it.
I’d like to at least see some create namings other than hop.
These are supposed to be creative people and environments right?

I should have been more clear. I was referring to the number of businesses participating, and the raw number of art galleries in Newark. There aren’t a whole lot right now, but if the program is successful, it could entice more businesses or co-ops to start up.
Oh I think it’s a good idea for newark. However 3 galleries open for 2 count them TWO whole hours? they should at least take note from the short north and expand the showing to more than the limited number of galleries. Thats the only true way to offer the experience up to artists. I mean 3 galleries can only offer so many artists an opportunity to show work. I wish newark luck, but I am getting tired of the regurgitation of the same idea in every little burb in central ohio.
I’m just ready to see a community take this in another direction.
I’m sure it will be great for Newark, but the concept just feels too “copycat” to me. :?

But it’s not your opinion that really matters here. It’s a Newarker’s…Newarkian…Newark resident. What other directions are there for a smaller city with not a lot of exposure to the arts? It seems like this is the game plan:
Step 1: Get people interested and involved in art through gallery hops.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit.
That damn Step 2 will get you every time.
“Local” is an illusion. There is no local. It is a concept that can be used to manipulate or motivate depending on the goals of the person communicating that message I suppose…
But we’re on one big sphere, all of us.
I’m fully aware my opinion doesn’t matter a whole lot (which is why I said this will probably be great for Newark anyway), and of all of the “art hop” festivals to pop up in the last year this one is at least the furthest away and most likely to be less competitive with the other Columbus neighborhoods.
I’m really not that familiar with Newark, but there’s got to be some unique way they can spin this. Or maybe I’m just expecting too much creativity out of a group of artists. ;)

“Artists” can be some of the most repressed, least apt to express an authentic (and creative) voice/opinion, and generally the most closed off or “shut down” of people. Seriously.
Pssst… just about every med to large city, college town, and arts district in the country hosts regular events called “hops.”
Try Googling any large city name, and “art hop” or “gallery hop”
OMG! They’re all copying the Short North! Surely the Short North originated the idea independently of all the others that were already going on.
Right… it’s something that’s naturally emerged in cultural centers around the country for decades.
But lately it’s something that every small neighborhood with a single art gallery or two has decided to hop on the bandwagon for one reason or another.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think it feels a bit forced in some instances.
FYI…
After reading the article and a little research (not a ton),
The news article quoted “hop” as in the article and most items I’ve seen so far they have and are labeling this “walk”. (Not much diff. I know)
Also, This is just a reorganization of an event they have been having over the years called “art in the city” (not sure where they got city  maybe town or village art walk would have been better. anyway) It seems it was 1st held in 2003 then again in 2004 none in 2005 then in 2006 again.
Just remember this event is just a comeback if you will of an event being done annually since 2003 with a few cancelled years. I’m not sure if experience or interest was the demise of prior attempts.
This is an article about the August event with hopes if it is a success more would be to come.
