    First Look: FUSIAN Grandview

    Cincinnati-based sushi company FUSIAN is about to open its third Columbus location.

    The build-your-own-roll sushi restaurant has outposts at Easton and the South Campus Gateway, and will open a store at 855 West Fifth Avenue on Monday. The company is referring to the new location as its Grandview store, even though it’s technically within the Fifth by Northwest neighborhood of Columbus.

    Founders Zach and Josh Weprin, and Stephan Harman, opened the first FUSIAN in 2010, in Cincinnati. The restaurant has since expanded to eight stores throughout Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton since then.

    The 1,900 square foot site seats 50, with a small front porch seating another ten. FUSIAN first acquired the building nine months back, after a yearlong search. The steady flow of Fifth Avenue traffic, plus a healthy population of young professionals and budding families helped cement the team’s location choice.

    “This store is really going to showcase where we come from and where we’re going to go,” said Zach Weprin. “I think it’s in the best neighborhood in the city, in terms of community.”

    Their Chipotle-style sushi bar includes both raw and cooked protein selections (raw tuna alongside grilled chicken and tofu), plus a variety of toppings and sauces. FUSIAN accommodates many diet concerns, including vegan, shellfish-free, and gluten-free.

    “We want to be Grandview’s living room,” said Harman. “It’s cozy, it’s clean, its simplistic.”

    The store design is a blend of traditional Japan and modern New York, with three lofty glass walls letting in natural light at every time of day. A fourth Columbus FUSIAN, set for Clintonville, is in the works for late 2015. The restaurant will occupy a former gas station at 4214 North High Street, across from Northstar Cafe.

    FUSIAN Grandview will be open daily, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
