Orin Hemminger plans to open Fozzie’s, a pizzeria, this June in Olde Town East. He didn’t expect to open a pizza joint – he really wants to own a microbrewery – but simply saw a need and wanted to fill it. “I can’t get a pizza near my house,” Hemminger said. “I have to drive to German Village or the Short North.”

Bill Yerkes, a familiar face on the local pizza scene, said he is building Hemminger a pizza oven and will show him a few tricks of the trade.

  • It’s about time. One of the commercial buildings just east of Parsons in OTE is going to have a business! And Fozzie’s will be open in June. There’s no reason more businesses shouldn’t follow suit.

  • Excellent! I’ve also thought that this side of town was lacking in quality pizza options. About the closest good pizza to us is Plank’s on Parsons. This new place looks like it’s less than a 15 minute walk from us!

    Hooray! :D

  • I walked past this yesterday while orin was sweeping the inside. I ask him about it and he said the developer is turning the whole block which is mostly row style buildings into apartments. it will be great for the neighborhood!

  • I really hope this starts a trend.  OTE has amazing potential to have quality retail mixed right into the neighborhood.  It will just take a few places doing well for others to follow.  I wish him success.

Nice! There is a lot of potential for redeveloped residential and commercial space along Oak Street in OTE. Could see it someday being the main “drag” through the neighborhood since Broad is so spread out and Bryden is mostly just residential.

  • This is great news though I’m surprised to see it going into the least fixed-up of the buildings on this corner.

As for the whole block going to apartments, don’t hold your breath.  I’ve been hearing that rumor for year.  But the latest rumor was that the developer who just wrapped up the Sherman Oak condos has his hands or eyes on some of this property so it might actually happen.

  • Well, there is one residential building that has been fixed up there so that might mean the rowhomes are next, but I don’t know if it’s the same developer.

I’d use extra caution crossing Broad with its asymmetrical intersections. I always have to be very careful since there is no sign telling turning traffic to yield if you want just want to ride across Broad.

  • There is hardly anything in OTE, commercial wise, but you can only go up from here.  Growing up, the closest pizza place was/is in Bexley.

  • I just heard through The Trots Grapevine that this was held up because they didn’t have the proper permits for the renovation.  Don’t know if it’s true or not but they definitely don’t look like they’ll be opening in June.

  • I drove by the other day and it looks like some progress has been made since the last time I went by (two months ago). Not sure about daily progress though. Might have to try to get in touch with the guy.

  • Thanks for the interest everyone!  Here are some updates:
    1.  The name of the pizzeria will be Yellow Brick Pizza.
    2.  We hope to be open by September 1st.
    3.  Getting and old boarded up building up to code for commercial restaurant space takes a long time, wheeew!

I told the author of this article back in March that it was way too early for me to give him much info, but he wanted estimates, June seemed far away back then, ha!  So, we are moving along as fast as we can, and we can’t go any faster than that.  We can’t wait to get open and start serving wonderful pizzas and delicious craft brews in OTE.
    Cheers,

  • Orin,

Any update on when Yellow Brick Pizza is opening?

    Pete

  • I saw the other day that the sign is up. That means Yellow Brick Pizza is really close to opening, right?

  • Awesome! I emailed him recently and hadn’t gotten an answer. I was hoping it was because he was busy and not because he had given up. I hadn’t driven by in awhile but it looked like progress hadn’t budged much. Really hoping for this to open soon! :D
