We spoke with Dan to find out more about the drink lineup at Four String and what sort of plans he has for his new company.

Q: First, can you tell us a bit about your personal and professional background?

A: I have lived in the Columbus area since 1991, after I moved here to attend OSU. I was in the music industry through most of the 90’s, playing in Columbus bands and touring throughout the United States. Currently, I live in the Grandview area.

Q: Where did you first develop your love of beer and how did that grow into a desire to start your own business?

A: I started home brewing on North Campus back in 1994. My roommate was an engineering student and saw a beer kit lying around that was an old Christmas gift for my father. My father never brewed and said that we could have it. I’ve pretty much been a brewer ever since. In the mid 90’s I was working at The Wooden Pony Brewing Company in Mansfield and learned the brewpub side of the business. It has been an long process, but it feels great to have the company up and running. I’m wearing many hats right now, but I do enjoy the challenge.

Q: What type of focus will the Four String Brewing Co. have when it comes to beers?

A: I have started out by producing two beers.  One is a Belgian Blonde called Backstage Blonde, and the other is a Pale Ale called Brass Knuckle APA. The next beer will probably be a seasonal, but there is also a Brown Ale I’ve been working on.

Q: With multiple new microbreweries coming online in Columbus in 2012, do you think that there’s a risk of too much competition?

A: I think that there is plenty of room for everyone at this point. Columbus beer drinkers are super supportive of local products. There are also so many great beers from different areas available in this market. I think that the key for any brewery is to make good beer. I believe that if you make good beer, there will always be a market for it.

Q: We spotted Four String at the Columbus Winter Beerfest a few weekends ago. How did that event go for you?

A: Beerfest was crazy! There were over 7,000 people there! I got a lot of really positive feedback on both of our beers. People have been asking me which one is more popular, and it is pretty much dead even between the two.

Q: Where can our readers find your products?

A: Bars currently serving Four String beer include Bodega, Brazenhead, BW3’s in Grandview, BW3’s on Bethel Road, Matt the Miller’s Tavern, Brew’s Cafe in Granville and Woodland’s Tavern. And there’s many more locations coming soon.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: Yes! I have growler hours on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm. You can bring your own growler and I will fill it, or I can sell you a sweet Four String Growler. Our tap room and brew house is located at 985 West 6th Avenue.
