Anyone heard of this place? Have a take?
It showed up on USA Today's 51 Great Burger Joints as Ohio's entry and I have never heard of it. Turf Club is what usually gets Cinci props.

yea i just read that too, i never heard of zips cafe either, probally a bias decision on which is the "true" best burger joint.
Lived near Mt. Lookout square for 3 years, ate there a few times and remembered nothing special about the place. It has been many years since I've been there, so I suppose things could have changed. But seeing as they've been "Cincy's best burger" for decades, I suspect there's just a lot of inertia behind the reputation.
Turf Club blows it away...
Zip's servers a simple, classic burger - the type I prefer. They've been using the same broilers since the place opened. I would go to Zip's over Terry's any day of the week (though I do get a kick out of Terry's ecentric owner).

I've been to Terry's (twice) and Zip's (once), and I have to say the place I prefer in Cincy is Arthur's in Hyde Park. Not only is the burger great, but they have a much bigger menu overall than the aforementioned joints, and they draw a younger, livelier crowd . . .
Have to admit, I'm always skeptical of these types of things. Mostly because of the Thurman Factor. I actually really like Thurman Burgers, but I think its been a while since they were the best burger in Columbus...and they still get local and national recognition as such all the time. With Skillet and Graffiti Burger opening over the last couple years, I don't even know if I'd have Thurman in my top 5 anymore, and yet just a couple weeks ago I watched it being touted at halftime during the Ohio State game.
Makes me wonder if Zip isn't a similar situation.
I've been to Zip's on several occasions, and I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed it every time. My impression is that it's a solid well-made burger. There is a lack of pretense about the place that I kinda like.
Best burger in town? I'm not sure if I'd say that.
Would I be willing to wait for a long time to have one? Probably not.
But, that being said, it is tasty. And I wouldn't discourage anyone from going.

+1 I miss the Thurman at its best: a neighborhood watering hole with good bar food, not an overexposed media darling.

I agree completely.
You always wonder if an old favorite has changed, but in this case it is pretty clear that the overall burger landscape has greatly changed for the better since Thurman's was the best in Columbus. The tide level rose and Thurman's has not.
Still like going there.
I think most of that list is like that. The only place I've visited where I really dug the burger is Kooma in Chi. It might have just been that it was called a 'Pantera Burger' tho.

I'll bet Thurman's doesn't miss those days, though. Place is always packed, and good for them!

It was always packed then too. Before and after expansion.

I grew up in Cincinnati and Zip's burgers are mediocre. Keep in mind that Cincinnati's best ribs are Montgomery Inn (terrible) and that the city's culinary pride is Skyline Chili (no description needed.)

Lew and I had Arthur's when we were there a few weeks ago and I thought it was fantastic and would definitely recommend it. Neat little area to boot.
mmmmmmm Arthur's...
I grew up visiting Zip's and I always loved it. They used to have a train that went around the space and if you sat at the bar, a train car would deliver your plate. As a kid, that was an amazing experience!
Zips is just as much about the fries as it is about the burgers. at least for me.
Yeah, the fries were really good. Zip's has been open forever. My parents hung out there regularly in the 60s!
