Youngstown Leads Nation’s Cities In “Concentrated” Poverty

A new study says Youngstown has the nation’s highest concentration of poverty among the 100 biggest metro areas. The report was released Thursday by the Brookings Institution, a think tank in Washington, D.C.

Vallourec to build yet another steel plant in Youngstown; $57 million expansion could create 100 jobs

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- French oil and gas pipeline company Vallourec is doubling down on Youngstown, investing another $57 million there to capitalize on an expected boom in shale gas drilling.
The new VAM USA threading plant will take steel pipes made at Vallourec's V&M Star mill in Youngstown and cut threads into them, making the pipes easier to connect. VAM already has threading plants in Houston, Canada and Mexico, but this will be its first in Ohio.

Youngstown’s Urban Agriculture Efforts Breathe New Life into Struggling Neighborhoods

In the heyday of Youngstown’s steel industry, wealthy families settled in the city’s Idora neighborhood, building solid, brick homes near Mill Creek Park. Trolley cars whistled down Glenwood Avenue, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, and shot-and-a-beer bars like the Empire Club Tavern served steel workers coming off their shifts.

A Visit to Youngstown by Joe Baur
Hard up for a depressing, Rust Belt story? Come to Youngstown, Ohio, where the steel mills packed up and left years ago, taking much of their population and quality of life with them. At least, that’s the theme national media has clutched onto ever since Bruce Springsteen acknowledged its sad reality with his morose ballad, “Youngstown.” But rumors of redevelopment and pockets of young professionals determined to rebuild this once great steel empire reached me up in Cleveland. As a Rust Belt junkie myself, I had to check it out.

Toledo, Youngstown high on recovery list

The Columbus metro area is making a steady recovery from the recession, though not nearly as dramatic as areas that suffered the most, such as Toledo. A new report from the Brookings Institution says Toledo and Youngstown are among the 20 metro areas in the country that have recovered the most from the low point of the economic downturn. Columbus, Akron, Cincinnati and Dayton are among the next 20 metro areas in strength of recovery out of the 100 profiled.
